George Reid
Sir George Houston Reid, (25 February 1845 â€“ 12 September 1918) was an Australian politician who led the Reid Government as the fourth Prime Minister of Australia from 1904 to 1905, having previously been Premier of New South Wales from 1894 to 1899. He led the Free Trade Party from 1891 to 1908. Reid was born in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland. He and his family immigrated to Australia when he was young. They initially settled in Melbourne, but moved to Sydney when Reid was 13, at which point he left school and began working as a clerk. He later joined the New South Wales civil service, and rose through the ranks to become secretary of the Attorney-General's Department. George Reid (Scottish Politician)
Sir George Newlands Reid (born 4 June 1939) is a Scottish politician and journalist who served as Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament from 2003 to 2007. A member of the Scottish National Party (SNP), he was a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for the Mid Scotland and Fife region from 1999 to 2003 and then for the Ochil constituency from 2003 to 2007. Reid was Member of Parliament (MP) for Clackmannan and East Stirlingshire from February 1974 to 1979. Early life Reid was born on 4 June 1939 in Tullibody, near Alloa, Clackmannanshire, the son of George Reid, a company director, and Margaret (née Forsyth). George Reid (1692–1763) was a minister of the Church of Scotland, who served as Moderator of the General Assembly in 1755. Life Reid was born in or near Edinburgh in 1692. In 1718, he graduated with an MA from the University of Edinburgh. George Hull Reid (16 January 1896 – ''1967'') was an Irish professional footballer, who played for Blackpool, Walsall, Cardiff City, Fulham, Stockport County, Rotherham County and represented Ireland. Career After starting his career in his home country, Reid moved to The Football League in 1920, signing for Blackpool. After only a handful of appearances for the club he joined Walsall where his talent for scoring began to emerge, finishing as the sides top scorer in his first season with 22 goals in 34 league games. The following season, he had scored 9 goals in 13 matches when he moved to Cardiff City in December 1922, scoring on his debut in a 5–1 defeat to Manchester City. George T. Reid (30 January 1882 – 8 September 1960) was a Scottish professional football inside left and centre forward who played in the Football League for Middlesbrough and Bradford Park Avenue. Sir George Oswald Reid (22 July 1903 – 18 February 1993) was an Australian politician. He was born in Hawthorn to railway officer George Watson Reid and Lillias Margaret Easton. He attended Camberwell Grammar School and Scotch College, and studied law at Melbourne University and in 1926 was admitted as a barrister and solicitor, practising at the bar until 1927 and as a solicitor thereafter. In 1947 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the Liberal member for Box Hill. He was party whip from 1950 to 1952, when he was defeated. Returned in 1955, he became cabinet secretary and minister without portfolio. Sir George Reid PRSA (31 October 1841 – 9 February 1913) was a Scottish artist. Early life and education Reid was born in Aberdeen in 1841, the son of George Reid (1803-1882) and his wife Esther Tait (1811-1892). He developed an early passion for drawing, which led to his being apprenticed in 1854 for seven years to Messrs Keith & Gibb, lithographers in Aberdeen. In 1861 Reid took lessons from an itinerant portrait-painter, William Niddrie, who had been a pupil of James Giles, R.S.A., and afterwards entered as a student in the school of the Board of Trustees in Edinburgh. Career Reid returned to Aberdeen to paint landscapes and portraits for any sum which his work could command. His first portrait to attract attention, from its fine quality, was that of George Macdonald, the poet and novelist (now the property of the University of Aberdeen). George Alexander Reid (1794 – 12 May 1852) was a British Conservative politician. Life He was the fourth son, by his first marriage, of Andrew Reid of Barnet, a Scottish brewer in London. Air Vice Marshal Sir George Ranald MacFarlane Reid, (25 October 1893 – 19 May 1991), known as Sir Ranald Reid, was a Scottish senior officer of the Royal Air Force. He began his career in aviation in the First World War with the Royal Flying Corps after transferring from the Black Watch. He rose through a series of command positions in the RAF to become a consequential participant in the Second World War. Early life George Ranald MacFarlane Reid was born in Ardeer, Scotland on 25 October 1893. First World War Reid began his military career in the Officer Training Corps prior to the First World War. He was commissioned a temporary second lieutenant in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders on 15 August 1914, in the early days of the war.
