George Pitt Morison
George Pitt Morison (31 August 1861 – 4 September 1946) was an Australian painter and engraver. He is noted in particular for his painting ''The Foundation of Perth 1829'' which was commissioned as part of Western Australia's centenary celebrations, and presented to the Art Gallery of Western Australia in February 1929. In 1890 Morison travelled to Europe to study at the Académie Julian in Paris and in the early 1930s worked as curator of art at the Western Australian Museum Art Gallery. Morison was born on 31 August 1861 in Melbourne and died on 4 September 1946 in South Yarra, Victoria. The Foundation Of Perth 1829
''The Foundation of Perth 1829'' is a 1929 oil-on-canvas painting by George Pitt Morison. It depicts a reconstruction of the ceremony by which the town of Perth, Western Australia was founded on 12 August 1829. Morison painted the work as part of Western Australia's centenary celebrations, and presented it to the Art Gallery of Western Australia in February 1929. The painting took George Pitt Morison almost eighteen months to research and paint. He studied a number of contemporary accounts of the ceremony, and had access to photographs of the people present. The official ceremony depicted in the image was held on a small hill overlooking the Swan River, in the immediate vicinity of the present Perth Town Hall. As no stones were readily available, it was decided to mark the occasion by felling a tree. Margaret Lillian Pitt Morison (3 December 1900 – 12 December 1985) was an Australian architect active in the 20th century. She was the first female architect member in Western Australia. As a practitioner, educator and historian, she made important contributions to Australian architecture during the 19th and 20th most prominently in Western Australia. Biography Personal life Her father, George Pitt Morison, was a well known Australian painter and member of the WA Society of Arts, exhibiting from 1902 and 1906. Morison was born in North Perth. She was educated at the Girls’ High School and Perth Modern School. In 1920 Morison was articled to Geoffrey Edwin Summerhayes and completed her training with the firm of Eales & Cohen. She was registered as Western Australia's first female architect in October 1924.
