George Welshman Owens
George Welshman Owens (August 29, 1786 – March 2, 1856) was a United States Representative and lawyer from Georgia. Early life Born in Savannah, Georgia, in 1786, Owens attended school in Harrow, England, and graduated from the University of Cambridge. After studying law in the office of Mr. Chitty in London, Owens returned to Savannah, gained admittance to the state bar and practiced law. Political career Owens was elected as a Jacksonian Representative from Georgia to the 24th United States Congress and won reelection as a Democrat to the 25th Congress, serving from March 4, 1835, until March 3, 1839. After his congressional service, Owens returned to practicing law and died in Savannah on March 2, 1856. Albert George Percy "Staunch" Owens (20 August 1900 – 7 October 1986) was an Australian rules footballer who played for East Perth in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). He was a seven-time WAFL premiership player with East Perth and was on the losing side of a grand final three times. After turning to umpiring he was involved in a further five grand finals, a total of 15 as a player and umpire. Playing career Born in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, Owens moved to Perth as a child, and played in a combined Perth schools team that toured the Goldfields in 1911. Sir George Bolster Owens (1808 – 1897) was an Anglo-Irish politician. Owens was born in New Barracks, Limerick, the son of the barrack master George Owens. He was educated at the University of Glasgow, graduating as a Doctor of Medicine in 1850. George Albert Owens (February 9, 1919 – December 21, 2003) was an American academic administrator and college president. He served as the 9th president of Tougaloo College in Mississippi serving from 1966 to 1984. He was the college's first African American president. He succeeded Adam D. Beittel who was removed from office after supporting civil rights activists. While in office he increased funding and campus housing. Biography He was born in Bolton, Mississippi, on February 9, 1919, to sharecropping parents and he graduated from Jackson College High School. He graduated from Tougaloo College and Columbia University. He had captained the school's football team. He worked as its business manager. The ''New York Times'' quoted him in a story about the college in 1970 saying ''"Institutions like ours have the responsibility to identify the strengths of our students"''.
