George Morrison (British Politician)
George Alexander Morrison (30 October 1869 – 8 September 1956) was a Scottish headmaster of Robert Gordon's College for 13 years and later a Liberal Party and then National Liberal Party politician in the United Kingdom. Early life and teaching Morrison was born on 30 October 1869 in Scotland and he was educated at Mortlach School and Aberdeen University. After he graduated in 1890 he joined Robert Gordon's College in Aberdeen as a teacher, later becoming principal teacher of classics. In 1910 he became Rector of Inverness Royal Academy. In 1920 he returned to Robert Gordon's College as headmaster, a post he held until his retirement in 1933. Politics Following his retirement from Robert Gordon's College he stood and was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for the Combined Scottish Universities at a by-election in 1934. Robert Gordon's College
Robert Gordon's College is a co-educational Independent school (UK) for day pupils in Aberdeen, Scotland. The school caters for pupils from Nursery through to S6. History Robert Gordon, an Aberdeen merchant, made his fortune in 18th century Poland trading from the Baltic port of Danzig, (Gdansk). Upon his death in 1731, he left his entire estate in a '''Deed of Mortification, dated 13 December 1729, for the foundation of Robert Gordon's Hospital, a residential school for poor boys. The fine building, designed by William Adam, was completed by 1732, but lay empty until the Governors had sufficient funds to complete the interior. A statue of the Founder was added in 1753 in a niche above the door. During the Jacobite Rising in 1746, the building was requisitioned by Hanoverian troops under the command of the Duke of Cumberland and was known as Fort Cumberland. John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir
John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir (; 26 August 1875 – 11 February 1940) was a Scottish novelist, historian, and Unionist politician who served as Governor General of Canada, the 15th since Canadian Confederation. After a brief legal career, Buchan simultaneously began his writing career and his political and diplomatic careers, serving as a private secretary to the administrator of various colonies in southern Africa. He eventually wrote propaganda for the British war effort during the First World War. He was elected Member of Parliament for the Combined Scottish Universities in 1927, but he spent most of his time on his writing career, notably writing '' The Thirty-Nine Steps'' and other adventure fiction. In 1935, King George V, on the advice of Prime Minister R. B. Dugald McCoig Cowan (17 October 1865 – 30 December 1933 ) was a Scottish educationalist and Liberal politician. Family and education Cowan was born in Maryhill, Glasgow the son of John and Christina Cowan. He was educated at Glasgow Free Church Training College and Glasgow University. He held MA and LL.B degrees. He never married. Career Cowan was a schoolteacher and an expert on the subject of education. He was Headmaster of North Kelvinside Higher Grade School from 1896 to 1919 and he played a large part in educational activities in Scotland in particular through the Educational Institute of Scotland, but also through Glasgow University and the Corporation of the City of Glasgow as well as other bodies. John Anderson, 1st Viscount Waverley, (8 July 1882 – 4 January 1958) was a Scottish civil servant and politician who is best known for his service in the War Cabinet during the Second World War, for which he was nicknamed the "Home Front Prime Minister". He served as Home Secretary, Lord President of the Council and Chancellor of the Exchequer. The Anderson shelters are named after him. James Ramsay MacDonald (; 12 October 18669 November 1937) was a British politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, the first who belonged to the Labour Party, leading minority Labour governments for nine months in 1924 and again between 1929 and 1931.
