George Middleton (activist)
George Middleton (1735 – April 6, 1815) was an African-American Revolutionary War veteran, a Prince Hall Freemason, and a community civil rights campaigner in Massachusetts. War service Middleton was one of 5,000 African Americans to serve in the military on the Patriot side of the Revolutionary War, although scant evidence survives about his military service. Colonel Middleton served as commander of the Bucks of America, a Boston-based unit of the Massachusetts militia. Few details have survived about the Bucks, one of only two all-black Patriot units in the war. After the war, Governor John Hancock honored Colonel Middleton and his company by presenting him with a flag to commemorate their service. The flag still exists and is owned by the Massachusetts Historical Society. George Augustus Middleton
George Augustus Middleton (1791–1848) was an English-Australian pastor and farmer who spent his time in Australia between Parramatta and the Hunter Valley. Early life George Middleton was born on 31 August 1791 in London. He was educated at the Westminster School. He studied at St John's College at Cambridge University. He attended there on scholarship as bishop boy where he studied classics, but failed to graduate. He worked a private tutor at Holland House in London. He returned to Westminster School as a teacher. He became a bishop of London on 18 July 1818. He was appointed ordained priest for the colonies in 1819. Time in Sydney He arrived in Port Jackson on 27 January 1820 with his son George. In August 1819 he was commissioned as an assistant chaplain for New South Wales. He was twenty nine years old. He worked an assistant chaplain and was directed to work as locum. George Middleton (American Politician)
George Middleton (October 14, 1800 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – December 31, 1888 in Allentown, New Jersey) was an American Democratic Party politician who represented New Jersey's 2nd congressional district from 1863 to 1865. Middleton was born in Philadelphia on October 14, 1800. He moved to Burlington, where he attended the public schools. He became a tanner and moved to Allentown, where he held several local offices. He served as a member of the New Jersey General Assembly in 1858 and 1859. Middleton was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-eighth Congress, serving in office from March 4, 1863 – March 3, 1865, but was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1864 to the Thirty-ninth Congress. After leaving Congress, he resumed the business of tanning. He died in Allentown on December 31, 1888, and was interred in Crosswicks Community Cemetery in Crosswicks, New Jersey. George Middleton (British Politician)
Sir George Middleton (1876 – 25 October 1938) was a Labour Party politician in the United Kingdom who served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Carlisle in the 1920s and 1930s. He was later a Church Estates Commissioner. Born in Ramsey, Huntingdonshire, he started work at the Post Office, and became prominent in the Union of Post Office Workers, editing its magazine.'Sir G. George Middleton (playwright)
George Middleton (October 27, 1880, in Paterson, New Jersey – December 23, 1967, in Washington, D.C.) was an American playwright, director, and producer. Career In 1902 George Middleton first had his work produced professionally when he worked on the stage adaptation of ''The Cavalier'' with Paul Kester and the novel's author, George W. Cable. In 1911 he published ''Embers: And Other One-Act Plays''; it was among the earliest such collections published by an American. Middleton authored many one-act plays and was a known proponent of the form. He collaborated with Guy Bolton several times. The comedy '' Polly With a Past'' (1917) was one of their successes, running for 315 performances and making a star of Ina Claire. A film adaptation was made in 1920, and in 1929 the stage musical ''Polly'' was based on it.
