George Mathews (soldier)
George Mathews (August 30, 1739 – August 30, 1812) was an American soldier and politician from the U.S. States of Virginia and Georgia. He was a brevet brigadier general in the Continental Army, the 20th and 24th Governor of Georgia, a U.S. Representative from Georgia, and the leading participant in the Patriot War of East Florida. Born in Augusta County in the Virginia Colony, Mathews was in early life a merchant and planter. As an officer in the colonial militia, he gained statewide fame for his role in the Battle of Point Pleasant of Dunmore's War. He was afterward elected to the House of Burgesses from Augusta County, but did not attend a session. On the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War, he served as colonel of the 9th Virginia Regiment in the Continental Army. He and his entire regiment were captured on October 4, 1777, in the Battle of Germantown. Mathews spent the next four years as a prisoner of war, including two years on a British prison ship. George Mathews Jr. (September 30, 1774 – November 14, 1836), was a Judge of the Superior Courts of the Territory of Mississippi and the Territory of Orleans, and Presiding Judge of the Louisiana Supreme Court from 1813 until his death in 1836. His ruling in ''Marie Louise v. Marot'' was cited as precedent by dissenting U.S. Supreme Court Justice John McLean in the 1856 Landmark decisions in the United States, landmark ''Dred Scott v. Sandford'' case. George Ballard Mathews
250px George Ballard Mathews, FRS (23 February 1861 – 19 March 1922) was an English mathematician. He was born in London. He studied at the Ludlow Grammar School which had instruction in Hebrew and Sanscrit as well as in Greek and Latin. He proceeded to University College, London where Olaus Henrici made him "realise that mathematics is an inductive science, not a set of rules and formulae." He then took up preparation for Cambridge Mathematical Tripos under the guidance of William Henry Besant. He came out Senior Wrangler for 1883. He was elected a Fellow of St John's College. In 1884 University College of North Wales was established under Principal Harry Reichel and Mathews as professor of mathematics. George Mathews (October 10, 1911 – November 7, 1984) was an American actor whose film career stretched from an uncredited appearance in '' Stage Door Canteen'' in 1943 to ''Going Home'' in 1971. Biography Mathews was born in Brooklyn, New York. His stage career began in the early 1930s, when he failed to get a job with the U.S. Postal Service. He joined the Federal Theatre Project and landed the role of Dynamite Jim in the 1937 Broadway revival of the play ''Processional''. Mathews was often cast as heavies or hardened military types.
