George Hilton (politician)
George Hilton dos Santos Cecílio (born 11 June 1971) more commonly known as George Hilton is a Brazilian politician and radio personality. Although born in Bahia, he has spent his political career representing Minas Gerais, having served as state representative since 2007. Personal life Before becoming a politician Hilton worked as a radio personality. He is also an ordained pastor with the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, although he says that his religion does not influence his political decisions. Political career Hilton served two consecutive terms in the Legislative Assembly of Minas Gerais, between 1999 and 2007, for the PSL and PL parties. In 2006, he was elected federal deputy for Minas Gerais, being re-elected successively in 2010 and 2014. During the period he was a member of the Progressive Party, and from 2009 until 2016, he was affiliated to the Brazilian Republican Party. The Chamber of Deputies ( pt, Câmara dos Deputados) is a federal legislative body and the lower house of the National Congress of Brazil. The chamber comprises 513 deputies, who are elected by proportional representation to serve four-year terms. The current President of the Chamber is the Deputy Arthur Lira ( PP- AL), who was elected on 1 February 2021. Structure The number of deputies elected is proportional to the size of the population of the respective state (or of the Federal District) as of 1994. However, no delegation can be made up of less than eight or more than seventy seats. Thus the least populous state elects eight federal deputies and the most populous elects seventy. These restrictions favour the smaller states at the expense of the more populous states and so the size of the delegations is not exactly proportional to population. The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG; pt, Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus, IURD) is an evangelical charismatic Christian denomination with its headquarters at the Temple of Solomon in São Paulo, Brazil. The church was founded in 1977 in Rio de Janeiro by Bishop Edir Macedo, who is the owner (since 1989) of the multi-billion television company RecordTV. In 1999 the UCKG claimed to have 8 million members in Brazil and was already considered a "commercial church". The denomination had established temples in the United Kingdom and in Africa and India, claiming a total of more than 12 million members worldwide that year. By 2013, the UCKG had congregations in New York City, and—according to the UCKG's website in the United States— had more than 300 congregations in 33 U.S. states. Progressistas (; PP) is a centre-right to right-wing political party in Brazil. Founded in 1995 as the Brazilian Progressive Party, it emerged from parties that were successors to ARENA, the ruling party of the Brazilian military dictatorship.
