George Buchanan Foster
Lieutenant George Buchanan Foster, (19 August 1897 – 3 June 1974) was a Canadian First World War flying ace. He was credited with seven aerial victories. After the First World War, Foster would become a King's Counsel and prominent attorney as a principal in a major law firm, as well as being appointed a member of the Legislative Council of Quebec. Early life George Buchanan Foster was born on 19 August 1897 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. His mother was Mary Maud Buchanan; his father was Senator George Green Foster. He had one sister, Ruth Elizabeth Foster. He was the great-grandson of Alexander Buchanan, a noted lawyer and judge. When George Buchanan Foster joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve in the First World War, he was a single student. George Foster (footballer)
George Walter Foster (born 26 September 1956) is an English former footballer and manager, who now works as assistant manager to James Rowe at National League club Chesterfield. He began his career as a full-back, but was later moved into central defence. He began his career at Plymouth Argyle in 1974, and went on to spend eight years with the "Pilgrims", winning promotion out of the Third Division in 1974–75, as well as the club's Player of the Year award in 1978 and 1980. He also played on loan at Torquay United and Exeter City. He was sold on to Derby County for a £40,000 fee in June 1982, before moving on to Mansfield Town the following year. He spent the next decade with the "Stags", and after being named as the club's Player of the Year, was then named on the PFA Team of the Year as he helped Mansfield to win promotion out of the Fourth Division in 1985–86. George Murphy "Pops" Foster (May 19, 1892 – October 30, 1969) was an American jazz musician, best known for his vigorous slap bass playing of the string bass. He also played the tuba and trumpet professionally. Biography Foster was born to Charley and Annie Foster, who "was nearly fullblooded Cherokee," on a plantation near McCall in Ascension Parish near Donaldsonville in south Louisiana, United States. His family moved to New Orleans when he was about 10 years of age. His older brother, Willard Foster, began playing banjo and guitar; George started out on a cello then switched to string bass. Foster married twice: to Bertha Foster in 1912 and Alma Foster in 1936. Pops Foster was playing professionally by 1907 and worked with Jack Carey, Kid Ory, Armand Piron, King Oliver and other prominent hot bands of the era. Major Chetwynd John Drake "Jock" Haswell (18 July 1919 – 21 January 2018), who also wrote as George Foster, was a British military and intelligence author and former British intelligence officer. He was "Author for Service Intelligence" 1966–1984. Early life Haswell was born in Penn, Buckinghamshire. He was educated at Little Appley Preparatory School and Winchester College. Career Haswell was trained at Sandhurst c. 1938/9 - 1941. He joined the Queen's Royal Regiment on 3 April 1941. Later in 1941 he was stationed in India, and saw local action. He was promoted Major on 3 July 1952, and retired from the army on 29 April 1960. Haswell's later work was mostly writing, continuing a thread from his military and intelligence work. He self-deprecatingly described his books as "holes held together with string". Nonetheless, his ''James II'', for example, was reviewed in the Times of 29 July 1972 by Geoffrey Homes. Foster was a Member of Parliament (MP) and a Senator in the Canadian Parliament for a total of 45 years, 5 months and 24 days. He enjoys the unique distinction of having served in the cabinets of seven Canadian Prime Ministers: Macdonald, Abbott, Thompson, Bowell, Tupper, Borden and Meighen. He coined the phrase "splendid isolation" to praise British foreign policy in the late 19th century. He played in Major League Baseball as an outfielder from through , most notably as an integral member of the Cincinnati Reds, with whom he won two World Series championships, in and .
