George Enescu National University Of Arts
The George Enescu National University of Arts ( ro, Universitatea Națională de Arte „George Enescu”) is a public university in Iași, Romania, founded in 1860. It was named in honor of the composer George Enescu. History The institution was established on 1 October 1860, as the ''Music and Declamation School'', by decree of Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza, followed 26 days later, by the foundation of the School for Sculpture and Painting. In October 1864, Cuza approved the Charter for the ''Music and Declamation Conservatory'' and the Charter for the ''National Schools of Fine Arts'' (establishing the departments of painting, sculpture, gravure, architecture and the art of landscape architecture). In 1931, the Conservatory and the School of Fine Arts became the ''Academy of Music and Dramatic Art of Iași'', which soon adopted the name George Enescu, and the ''Iași Academy of Fine Arts'', respectively. Hariclea Darclée
Hariclea Darclée (née Haricli; later Hartulari; 10 June 1860 – 12 January 1939) was a celebrated Romanian operatic soprano who had a three-decade-long career. Darclée's repertoire ranged from coloratura soprano roles to heavier Verdi roles, including many in the Franco-Italian lyric repertory. Throughout her career she participated in several world premieres, creating the title roles in Giacomo Puccini's ''Tosca'', Pietro Mascagni's ''Iris'', and Alfredo Catalani's ''La Wally''. The Moldova Philharmonic Orchestra ( ro, Filarmonica Moldova Iași) is a Romanian symphony orchestra located in Iași, Romania. The name "Moldova" in the title refers to the historical region of Moldavia. History During the 18 and 19th century, Iași, as the main city and capital of the former Principality of Moldavia, had been closely connected to European musical life, and great European musicians used to play in the city. Tudor Zbârnea (born 29 December 1955) is a Moldovan painter. Zbârnea has contributed to the assertion, in Chișinău, of an original artistic thinking stream that was against "artistic vigilance" mentality, which was too hostile to the spectacular innovations in plastic art. Currently, he is the director of the National Museum of Fine Arts of Moldova. Nicolae Tonitza
Nicolae Tonitza (; April 13, 1886 – February 27, 1940) was a Romanian painter, engraver, lithographer, journalist and art critic. Drawing inspiration from Post-impressionism and Expressionism, he had a major role in introducing modernist guidelines to local art. Constantin Daniel Stahi
Constantin Daniel Stahi (14 November 1844 – 18 June 1920) was a Romanian painter and gravure artist. Biography Born in Dobreni, Neamț County, Stahi attended school first in Piatra Neamț (1850–1854) and then at the Socola Monastery (1854–1857). In 1862 he entered the National School of Fine Arts from Iași, where he was taught by Gheorghe Panaiteanu Bardasare and Gheorghe Șiller. He continued his artistic education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where, from 1871 to 1878, he studied painting, metal gravure, and xylography. Camil Ressu
Camil Ressu (; 28 January 1880 – 1 April 1962) was a Romanian painter and academic, one of the most significant art figures of Romania. Biography Early life and career Born in Galați, Ressu originated from an Aromanian family that migrated to Romania from Macedonia at the start of the 19th century. His father, Constantin Ressu, who was a journalist and had studied law in Brussels, was an artist in his spare time. In 1887, Ressu was enrolled at the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest. He continued his studies at the School of Fine Arts in Iași, where he studies with painters Gheorghe Popovici and Gheorghe Panaiteanu Bardasare. Mihai Nechita-Burculet (born 5 February 1949, Sarca, Romania) is a Romanian painter. He studied Plastic Arts at the Art Academy of Iaşi, History of Arts at the ''Nicolae Grigorescu'' Art Academy of Bucharest. Nelly Miricioiu (born 31 March 1952) is a Romanian-born British operatic soprano singing a large repertoire ranging from bel canto to verismo. Biography Born in Adjud, Romania, Miricioiu started singing at 5 and was hailed as a child prodigy. At 9 she started studying piano and at 14 she won her first singing contest, "Young Talents, Great hopes". At 18 she sang in Pergolesi's ''La serva padrona'' and joined the Conservatory of Iași where she continued her studies with Tibi Popovici. In 1972 she was the youngest contestant in the Francisco Vinas Musical Competition in Barcelona and in 1975 she won the first prize at the very first Maria Callas Grand Prix in Athens. Ernest Maftei
Ernest Maftei (; 6 March 1920 – 19 October 2006) was a Romanian film actor. He appeared in more than seventy films from 1953 to 2006. Biography Born in Prăjești, Bacău County, he attended high school in Bacău, and, at age 17, he joined the youth branch of the Iron Guard. For his militant activities, he was detained in 1938 for 5 months at a correctional facility in Vaslui, and later at prisons in Galați, Jilava, and Văcărești. In 1944 he graduated the Academy of Music and Dramatic Art of Iași. During the early Communist regime he was arrested and spent more time in prison before being released after the intervention of some Jews he helped.
