George Ellis FSARigg and Mills (19 December 1753 – 10 April 1815) was a Jamaican-born English antiquary, satirical poet and Member of Parliament. He is best known for his ''Specimens of the Early English Poets'' and ''Specimens of Early English Metrical Romances'', which played an influential part in acquainting the general reading public with Middle English poetry. Early life George Ellis was born in Jamaica on 19 December 1753, the posthumous son of a sugar-planter. George Henry Ellis
George Henry Ellis (26 October 1875 – 3 July 1898) was a sailor in the United States Navy during the Spanish–American War. He was the only US sailor killed in action during the Battle of Santiago de Cuba. Early life and career Ellis was born in Peoria, Illinois. At an early age he and his mother moved to New York City, and later to Brooklyn, New York. He enlisted in the Navy on 26 February 1892 as apprentice, third class. On 25 October 1896 he was honorably discharged with a rate of apprentice, first class. Ellis re-enlisted on 3 May 1897 as a seaman, and was later assigned to the as a Yeoman 1st Class. He was transferred to the armored cruiser , and was promoted to Chief Yeoman on 1 February 1898. Aboard the ''Brooklyn'', Ellis served as Captain Francis Cook's clerk. George Edward Ellis
George Edward Ellis (8 August 1814 – 20 December 1894) was a Unitarian clergyman and historian. Biography Ellis was born and died in Boston. He graduated from Harvard in 1833, and then from the Divinity School in 1836. After two years' travel in Europe, he was ordained, on 11 March 1840, as pastor of the Harvard Unitarian Church, Charlestown, Massachusetts. From 1857 until 1863, he was professor of systematic theology in Harvard Divinity School. In 1864 he delivered before the Lowell Institute a course of lectures on the “Evidences of Christianity,” in 1871 a course on the “Provincial History of Massachusetts,” and in 1879 a course on “The Red Man and the White Man in North America” (1882). George Viner Ellis
George Viner Ellis FRS (25 September 1812 Minsterworth - 25 April 1900 Minsterworth) was Professor of Anatomy at University College London and one of the foremost anatomists of his time. George Viner was the second son of Viner Ellis of Duni House, Minsterworth, near Gloucester, his family having been landowners in the area for many years. His education was at the Crypt Grammar School from where he went to the Cathedral Grammar School, and later was apprenticed to a Dr Buchanan of Gloucester. His uncle, Daniel Ellis, a member of the Royal Society Edinburgh, suggested that he enrol as a medical student at the newly founded University College London. In his vacations he studied in Paris and attended lectures and worked at anatomy in Berlin. Ellis was Demonstrator of Anatomy under Professor Richard Quain, and succeeded him in the Chair of Anatomy in 1850, retiring as Emeritus Professor in 1877, but always aloof from the professional world. George Washington Ellis (May 4, 1875 – November 26, 1919) was an African-American attorney, writer, and speaker. Ellis was born on May 4, 1875, in Weston, Missouri. He attended the University of Kansas, graduating in 1893 with a Bachelor of Law degree. George Ellis (born 12 February 1964) is an Australian conductor, composer and orchestrator. He presents concerts for international events with a broad range of styles from classical to pop/rock and jazz as well as presenting orchestral concerts for young audiences. He also lectures in conducting at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and is a regular presenter of Sonic Journey for ABC Radio Sydney’s program with Simon Marnie. Early years George Ellis was born in Penrith in Western Sydney to Greek-Australian parents. As a child, he learnt to read music and took lessons in music theory and harmony. George James Welbore Agar-Ellis, 1st Baron Dover PC FRS FSA (14 January 179710 July 1833) was a British politician and man of letters. He was briefly First Commissioner of Woods and Forests under Lord Grey between 1830 and 1831. Background and education Agar-Ellis was the only son of Henry Agar-Ellis, 2nd Viscount Clifden, and Lady Caroline, daughter of George Spencer, 4th Duke of Marlborough. He was educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford. He was elected a Fellow of both the Society of Antiquaries and Royal Society in 1816. Political career Agar-Ellis was returned to Parliament for Heytesbury in 1818, a seat he held until 1820. George Ellis Pugh (November 28, 1822July 19, 1876) was a Democratic politician from Ohio. He served in the U.S. Senate from 1855 to 1861. Early life Pugh was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was the son of Lot and Rachel (nee Anthony) Pugh, who were married in Hamilton County, Ohio, on July 7, 1814. George had three brothers and a sister. George Ellis Pugh descended from Ellis Pugh, Sr. (1656–1718), an early Welsh immigrant to Pennsylvania and Quaker minister who, with his wife Sinah, emigrated to Pennsylvania to escape religious persecution in 1686. Pugh attended Miami University. Career He began practicing law in 1843, later serving as a captain in the 4th Ohio Regiment in the Mexican–American War.
