George Elliot (Royal Navy Officer, Born 1784)
Admiral Sir George Elliot (1 August 1784 – 24 June 1863) was a Royal Navy officer who served during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, and the First Opium War. Elliot was born to influential and distinguished family that included several powerful politicians and diplomats. After entering the navy at an early age he served through several of the decisive battles of the French Revolutionary Wars, seeing action at Genoa, Hyères, and Cape St Vincent and under Nelson at the Nile and Copenhagen. He had graduated to his own commands by the outbreak of the Napoleonic Wars, being described by Nelson as one of the best officers in the navy, and served with distinction in the Mediterranean and in the East Indies, where he took part in the Invasion of Java. Left without significant employment after the end of the wars with France, Elliot took up politics, with the support of the Duke of Clarence and his relatives already in government office. George Elliot (Royal Navy Officer, Born 1813)
Admiral Sir George Augustus Elliot (25 September 1813 – 13 December 1901) was a British Royal Navy flag officer and politician. Naval career He was born in Calcutta, the son of Admiral Sir George Elliot. He entered the navy in November 1827, and was made lieutenant on 12 November 1834. Until 1837 he served aboard HMS ''Astraea'' along with Lord Edward Russell, also later to become a Member of Parliament. On 15 January 1838 he was made captain of the brig ''Columbine'' at the Cape and South Africa stations, under the direct command of his father, capturing six slavers in the two years he served in this position. In February 1840 he went to China with his father, and on 3 June was given command of HMS ''Volage'' after the death of its previous captain, returning to England in 1841 with his invalided father on board as a passenger. Sir George William Elliot, 2nd Baronet (13 May 1844 – 15 November 1895) was an English colliery owner and Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons in two periods between 1874 and 1895. Elliot was born at Houghton-le-Spring, the son of Sir George Elliot, 1st Baronet and his wife Margaret Green, daughter of George Green. His father had been MP for North Durham. Elliot was educated at Edinburgh and at Trinity College, Cambridge. He was an athletics blue in 1865 and 1866. He was the owner of a colliery. At the 1874 general election Elliot was elected Member of Parliament for Northallerton. He held the seat until 1885. In 1886, he was elected MP for Richmond and held the seat until 1895. George Elliott (born 1991) is an English rugby league footballer currently playing for the York City Knights in the Co-operative Championship. He previously played in the Super League for Leeds Rhinos and is, by preference, a but can also play on the . George Francis Scott-Elliot FRGS FLS FRSE (1862–1934) was a botanist and academic author of Franco-Scots descent. He was a personal friend of Patrick Geddes. Biography Scott-Elliot was born in Calcutta in India of Franco-Scots parentage. His father, James Scott Elliot (d.1880) was a merchant in Calcutta, coming from the Scottish Borders. He went to Cambridge University in 1879 and graduated BA (Maths tripos). He then attended Edinburgh University gaining a BSc in Botany. He had a natural love of travel. His first major trip was 1888-89 when he explored South Africa Mauritius and Madagascar. In June 1890 he gave a lecture to the Linnean Society on the flora of Madagascar. He then did further studies in Libya and Egypt before being commissioned by the Franco-Britiah Delineation Committee to define the boundaries of Sierra Leonne.
