George Cassidy (Australian Footballer)
George Boucher Cassidy (19 August 1905 – 12 January 1985) was a former Australian rules footballer who played with Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He attended Caulfield Grammar School, and was recruited by Melbourne from the Caulfield Grammarians Football Club. In 1928, playing for Caulfield Grammarians, he was declared to be the best and fairest player in the Victorian Amateur Football Association's A Grade competition: "as a ruck and half-forward … G. Cassidy, of Old Caulfield Grammarians … has been a mainstay of that team all the season through". Towards the end of the 1928 season he played two games for the Brighton First XVIII in the Victorian Football Association: the first against Port Melbourne in the final home-and-away game for the season on Saturday, 18 August 1928, and the second in the season's second semi-final (Brighton lost to Coburg by three points). Caulfield Grammarians Football Club
Caulfield Grammarians Football Club, is an Australian rules football club based in Caulfield East, Victoria. The club, composed of Caulfield Grammar School alumni is, along with Old Melburnians, the (equal) second oldest consecutively competing team in the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) (the oldest being Collegians). The team entered the competition in 1920, and has competed continuously since that time (competition was suspended from 1940 to 1945 during World War II). In 2020, the club’s centenary year, all 6 teams will be playing in their respective A Grades. Their home ground is the Glenhuntly Oval, at the corner of Neerim Road and Booran Road. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). During general play, players may position themselves anywhere on the field and use any part of their bodies to move the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. Australian Football League
The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. Originally known as the Victorian Football League (VFL), it was founded in 1896 as a breakaway competition from the Victorian Football Association (VFA), with its inaugural season commencing the following year. Victorian Amateur Football Association
The Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) is the largest senior community Australian rules football competition in Victoria. It consists of seven senior men's and women's divisions ranging from Premier to Division 4. In addition there are U19's sections and five Thirds sections, primarily made up of either clubs only able to field one team, or clubs from higher sections that can field a third team after their seniors and reserves. The league operates a double promotion and relegation system between sections with various rules dictating which section clubs can play in.
