George John Douglas Campbell, 8th and 1st Duke of Argyll (30 April 1823 – 24 April 1900; styled Marquess of Lorne until 1847), was a Scottish polymath and Liberal statesman. He made a significant geological discovery in the 1850s when his tenant found fossilized leaves embedded among basalt lava on the Island of Mull. He also helped to popularize ornithology and was one of the first to give a detailed account of the principles of bird flight in the hopes of advancing artificial aerial navigation (i.e. flying machines). His literary output was extensive writing on topics varying from science and theology to economy and politics. Though he grew up in Belfast, Campbell spent much of his adult life living and painting in Spain and Dublin, Ireland. George Ashley Campbell (November 27, 1870 – November 10, 1954) was an American engineer. He was a pioneer in developing and applying quantitative mathematical methods to the problems of long-distance telegraphy and telephony. His most important contributions were to the theory and implementation of the use of loading coils and the first wave filters designed to what was to become known as the image method. Both these areas of work resulted in important economic advantages for the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T). Education Campbell was educated at the McCollom Institute in New Hampshire and then at MIT, where he graduated in 1891. He then received a master's degree from Harvard University in 1893. George Campbell (town Marshal)
George Washington Campbell (December 23, 1850 – April 14, 1881) was born in Greenup County Kentucky and was the youngest of five children. He moved to Texas in 1875 and by the end of 1876 he was appointed deputy sheriff of Clay County Texas. In November 1880 Campbell moved to El Paso, Texas, where he was named town marshal on December 1, 1880. He served from late 1880 until January 1881, when he was replaced by a new town marshal, Ed Copeland. Campbell was the last person killed by Dallas Stoudenmire in what would later be dubbed Four Dead in Five Seconds Gunfight that took place on April 14, 1881. George Campbell (murder Victim)
Phoebe McWain Campbell (c. 1847 – 20 June 1872) was a Canadian woman who was hanged for the murder of her husband. Campbell had alleged that on the morning of July 15, 1871, in Thorndale, Middlesex County, Ontario, two black-faced men broke into George and Phoebe's log cabin home and brutally hacked George to death with an axe because he refused to hand over some money. They had attempted to use a gun which misfired. During the investigation, six local men were arrested, including Thomas Coyle, who was George's farmhand. Doubt about Phoebe's innocence arose rapidly as she was seen talking with Coyle; she also seemed to have done nothing to help save her husband as he was being murdered and seemed very unemotional following George's funeral. Alexander Petrie Campbell
The Reverend Alexander Petrie Campbell OBE (4 June 1881 - 13 December 1963) was an Australian-born Congregational church minister and chairman of the Congregational Union of Australia and New Zealand from 1937 until 1939. Immediate family Alex Campbell was born at Redfern, New South Wales, the second son of George Campbell, an English-born Congregational minister. Before entering the ministry, George was a Moulder Journeyman, the occupation he gave at the time of his first marriage to Ann Hamilton. They were married in 1856, but she died without bearing any children in 1865. George went on to marry Mary Adam Petrie, Alexander's mother, in 1872. She was born in Paisley, Scotland. Admiral Sir George Campbell (14 August 1759 – 23 January 1821) was a Royal Navy officer who went on to be Commander-in-Chief, Portsmouth. Naval career Campbell joined the Royal Navy in 1772. He was given command of and took part in the Battle of Genoa in 1795 during the French Revolutionary Wars; he subsequently commanded HMS ''Berwick''. In 1802 he went to Jamaica where he commanded the squadron. He was appointed Commander-in-Chief, The Downs in 1808 and Commander-in-Chief, Portsmouth in 1818 and committed suicide in 1821 while still in that role. Campbell was primarily interested in rhetoric, since he believed that its study would enable his students to become better preachers. He became a philosopher of rhetoric because he took it that the philosophical changes of the Age of Enlightenment would have implications for rhetoric.
