George Butler (record Producer)
George Butler (September 2, 1931 – April 9, 2008) was a prominent American jazz record producer, executive and A&R man. He worked for a number of well-known jazz record labels from the 1960s to the 1990s including Blue Note Records, Columbia Records and United Artists Records. He signed and launched the careers of a number of now famous artists including Wynton Marsalis, Harry Connick Jr. and Nnenna Freelon. Biography Butler was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, and studied at Howard University before going on to earn a master's degree in music education from Columbia University. George Edwin Butler
George Edwin Butler (June 5, 1868 – May 1, 1941) was an American lawyer and an author of research studies and works, particularly about North Carolina. His most notable book is ''The Croatan Indians of Sampson County, North Carolina. Their Origin and Racial Status. A Plea for Separate Schools'' (1916). His older brother, Marion Butler, was elected as United States Senator from North Carolina. Early life Butler was born in rural Sampson County, North Carolina, on his father's farm. It was located a few miles outside of the town of Roseboro. His Butler family and ancestors had lived there since the inception of the county and were yeoman farmers. He and his siblings were taught to admire knowledge. The state's public school system was started only after the Civil War and was limited in rural areas. Butler Brothers was a retailer and wholesale supplier based in Chicago. It was founded in 1877 as a mail-order company by Charles Hamblet Butler, George H. Butler and Edward Burgess Butler. History In the 1920s, Butler Brothers moved into retailing with a chain of "Scott" and "L. C. Burr" stores. In the early 1930s, they developed the Ben Franklin Stores and Federated Stores, both of which were franchised five and dime stores. Most were in small towns. George Ide Butler
George Ide Butler (1834–1918) was a Seventh-day Adventist minister, administrator, and author. Originally from Vermont, United States, Butler's parents were closely involved in the beginnings of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. In 1853 his family moved to Iowa where he was converted at age 22 and baptized by J. N. Andrews. He then settled on a farm and taught school during the winter months. On March 10, 1859, he married Lentha Lockwood (1826-1901). They afterward settled near Waukon, Iowa, where Butler resumed teaching. In 1865, after issues in the Iowa Constituency meeting and subsequent resignation of its leaders, Snook and Brinkerhoff, Butler was elected Iowa Conference president. In June 1867 Butler was given a ministerial license, and in October was ordained. He worked indefatigably as an evangelist, bringing unity to the previously fragmented conference. George Stephen Butler (16 December 1900 at Marlborough, Wiltshire – 21 September 1969 at Kingswear, Devon), played first-class cricket for Somerset in one match in 1920 and Minor Counties cricket for Wiltshire from 1920 to 1939. While appearing for Wiltshire, he also played in seven first-class matches, mostly for teams representing the Minor Counties as a whole against touring sides in the 1930s. Educated at Marlborough College, Butler was a right-handed opening or middle order batsman. He bowled only seven overs in first-class cricket, and his bowling style is not known, but in Minor Counties cricket he was a fairly regular bowler in his early career, sometimes opening the bowling for Wiltshire. His one match for Somerset came against Oxford University in 1920, and he made only seven and two in a low-scoring match that was over inside two days. George Harris Butler (1840 – May 11, 1886) the nephew of a prominent Massachusetts Congressman, was appointed Consul General in Alexandria, Egypt, in 1870. He dismissed all consular agents, auctioned off their commissions, and purchased dancing girls. Shortly before his recall in 1872, he was involved in a brawl with three former Confederate officers. Background and career Butler was born in Massachusetts but spent his formative years in California. During the Civil War he was a lieutenant in the 10th US infantry and later a quartermaster and ordnance officer, resigning in 1863. He was commander in chief, United States Strategic Command, and the last commander of Strategic Air Command. George "Wild Child" Butler (October 1, 1936 – March 1, 2005) was an American blues harmonica player, and vocalist. Career Butler was born October 1, 1936, in Autaugaville, Alabama, and began playing blues music in bands in the late 1950s, but it was not until 1966 that he began to receive notice, after moving to Chicago and signing with Jewel Records.
