George Burgess (Australian Politician)
George Arthur Burgess (2 November 1863 – 8 February 1941) was an Australian politician. He was born at Mara Creek to publican George Edward Burgess and Mary Grimley. He attended primary school until the age of twelve, after which he worked as a shearer and farmer in the Coonamble district. On 27 January 1896 he married Florence Clark, with whom he would have five children. An organiser and local secretary of the Australian Workers' Union, he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in 1901 as the Labor member for Young. Young was abolished in 1904 and replaced by Burrangong which Burgess successfully contested in 1904. and remained on the Labor backbench until the conscription split of 1916, when, as a supporter of conscription, he followed Premier William Holman into the Nationalist Party. Nationalist Party Of Australia
The Nationalist Party, also known as the National Party, was an Australian political party. It was formed on 17 February 1917 from a merger between the Commonwealth Liberal Party and the National Labor Party, the latter formed by Prime Minister Billy Hughes and his supporters after the 1916 Labor Party split over World War I conscription. The Nationalist Party was in government (from 1923 in coalition with the Country Party) until electoral defeat in 1929. From that time it was the main opposition to the Labor Party until it merged with pro-Joseph Lyons Labor defectors to form the United Australia Party (UAP) in 1931. Peter Loughlin
Peter Ffrench Loughlin (12 December 1881 – 11 July 1960) was an Australian politician. Early life He was born in Braidwood to police constable John Loughlin and Sarah Jane, ''née'' Ffrench. He was educated at Girrinderra and Goulburn, becoming a schoolteacher and teaching at various public schools from 1900 to 1917. He married Louisa Davis at Cowra on 16 April 1906, with whom he had seven children. Parliamentary career A member of the Labor Party, he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in 1917 as the member for Burrangong, moving to Cootamundra with the introduction of proportional representation in 1920. He was Secretary for Lands and Minister for Forests from 1920 to 1922 and from 1925 to 1926, and deputy leader of the Labor Party from 1923 to 1926 (and deputy premier from 1925–26), when he resigned from the party. Chris Watson
John Christian Watson (born Johan Cristian Tanck; 9 April 186718 November 1941) was an Australian politician who served as the third prime minister of Australia, in office from 27 April to 18 August 1904. He served as the inaugural federal leader of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) from 1901 to 1907 and was the first member of the party to serve as prime minister. Watson was born in Valparaíso, the son of a German Chilean seaman. He grew up on the South Island of New Zealand, taking the surname of his step-father when his Irish-born mother remarried. He left school at a young age, working in the printing industry as a Compositor (typesetting), compositor. Watson moved to Sydney in 1886 and became prominent in the local Australian labour movement, labour movement. William Holman
William Arthur Holman (4 August 1871 – 5 June 1934) was an Australian politician who served as Premier of New South Wales from 1913 to 1920. He came to office as the leader of the Australian Labor Party (New South Wales Branch), Labor Party, but was expelled from the party in the Australian Labor Party split of 1916, split of 1916. He subsequently became the inaugural leader of the NSW branch of the Nationalist Party (Australia), Nationalist Party. Holman was born in London and arrived in Australia at the age of 17, becoming a cabinet-maker in Sydney. Burrangong was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales created in the 1904 re-distribution of electorates following the 1903 New South Wales referendum, which required the number of members of the Legislative Assembly to be reduced from 125 to 90. It was named after Burrangong station, the first squatting run in the Young area and consisted of parts of the abolished districts of Boorowa, Grenfell and Young. Electoral District Of Young
Young was an electoral district for the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales, named after and including the town of Young. It elected two members between 1880 and 1894 and one member from 1894 to 1904, when it was replaced by Burrangong. The sitting member George Burgess () successfully contested Burrangong. In 1920, with the introduction of proportional representation, Burrangong was absorbed by the three member district of Cootamundra. Proportional representation was abandoned in 1927 and Young was recreated.
