George Bowman (Australian Politician)
George Bowman (1795 East Lothian, Scotland – 26 August 1878 Richmond, New South Wales, Australia) was a pastoralist, benefactor of Richmond and politician in the colony of New South Wales. He was the eldest son of John Bowman, a pioneer settler from East Lothian in Scotland, and his wife Honor née Honey, from Cornwall. His brother William Bowman (1799–1874), also a Member of the first Legislative Council and also a Member of the Legislative Assembly. George Bowman was the father with Eliza Sophia née Pearce of George Pearce Bowman (1821–1870), pastoralist, Robert Bowman (1830–1873), medical practitioner, and Alexander Bowman (1838–1892) (also a Member of the Legislative Assembly), parliamentarian, the eldest, fifth and seventh sons, pioneers of the Hawkesbury region. George Bowman (pioneer)
George Bowman (10 February 1699–2 March 1768) was an 18th-century American pioneer, landowner and a prominent Indian fighter in the early history of the Virginia Colony. He, along with his father-in-law Jost Hite, was one of the first to explore and settle Shenandoah Valley. His estate, on which Fort Bowman was founded, was one of the earliest homes to be built in Shenandoah Valley and is the site of present-day Strasburg, Virginia. Four of his sons, Joseph, Isaac, Abraham and Johannes, also became well-known frontiersmen in Kentucky during the late 1770s. His great-grandson, John Bryan Bowman founded Kentucky University and Agricultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky. Their older brother, Jacob, was also a famous American pioneer. George Bowman (Zen Master)
George Bowman, or Bo Mun Soen sa Nim, is a Zen master and licensed psychotherapist living at Furnace Mountain in Clay City, Kentucky (he does not teach there). He received Dharma transmission from Seung Sahn Soen Sa Nim in 1992, and is a former teacher in the Kwan Um School of Zen. He was a founding member of the Providence Zen Center in 1972 and also did koan study with Joshu Sasaki from 1977 to 2003. Furnace Mountain is run by Dae Gak Soen Sa Nim—another former Kwan Um line teacher. He was a resident teacher at the Cambridge Buddhist Association from 1991 to 1999, and in 1994 became a guiding teacher of the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy. Today he travels to Boston, Massachusetts most months to lead a "floating zendo" named the Single Flower Sangha. A native of Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, Bowman was the brother of fellow Negro leaguer Emmett Bowman. Bowman Baronets
There have been two baronetcies created for persons with the surname Bowman, both in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. The Bowman Baronetcy, Clifford Street in the parish of St James, Westminster, in the County of Middlesex and of Joldwynds in the parish of Holmbury St Mary in the County of Surrey, was created in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom on 23 January 1884 for the prominent surgeon, histologist and anatomist William Bowman. He was succeeded by his eldest son, the second Baronet, who was a barrister. He also assumed by Royal licence the additional surname of Paget, which was that of his maternal grandfather (however, none of the subsequent holders used this surname). His eldest son, the third Baronet, was a clergyman and served as Rector of Shere, Surrey, and as Rural Dean for Cranleigh, Surrey.
