George Bliss (pedicab Designer)
George Bliss is a bicycle designer living, working and teaching in Manhattan, New York City. He has taught bike frame welding at Parsons The New School for Design. Bliss coined the cycling term "Critical Mass" in the Ted White documentary ''Return of the Scorcher'' (1992) to describe the way cars, bicycles and pedestrians negotiate uncontrolled busy intersections in China. He pioneered the niche bicycle industry in Manhattan, specifically custom designed cargo bikes including the "Dump Trike" and the smaller "Pick-Up Trike" and pedicabs. From 1995 to 2015, Bliss owned and operated a pedicab rental business (The ''Hub Station'') in SoHo and then in the West Village. The business also sold and repaired recumbent bicycles, folding bicycles, electric bicycles, kick scooters and Xootrs with electric motors attached. George William Bliss
George Bliss (July 21, 1918 – September 11, 1978) was an American journalist. He won a 1962 Pulitzer Prize for investigative journalism for the ''Chicago Tribune'' and was associated with two others: * 1962: corruption at the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago. * 1973: For uncovering flagrant violations of voting procedures in the primary election of March 21, 1972 * 1976: waste and fraud at mortgage firms related to Federal Housing Administration mortgage insurance Early life Bliss was born on July 21, 1918 in Denver, Colorado to William Bliss and Marie Bresnanhis. George Bliss (Congressman)
George Bliss (January 1, 1813 – October 24, 1868) was a member of the United States House of Representatives from Ohio for two non-consecutive terms in the 1850s and 1860s. Early life and career Bliss was born in Jericho, Vermont. He attended Granville College. Moved to Ohio in 1832, studied law with David Kellogg Cartter, was admitted to the bar in 1841 and became Cartter's law partner in Akron, Ohio. Bliss was Mayor of Akron in 1850. In 1850 he was appointed the presiding judge of the eighth judicial district and continued in that role until the office was discontinued after a constitutional change. Congress He was elected to the Thirty-third Congress (4 March 1853 – 3 March 1855) as a Democrat. Bliss subsequently withdrew his nomination for re-election. Hartford Convention
The Hartford Convention was a series of meetings from December 15, 1814, to January 5, 1815, in Hartford, Connecticut, United States, in which the New England Federalist Party met to discuss their grievances concerning the ongoing War of 1812 and the political problems arising from the federal government's increasing power. This convention discussed removing the three-fifths compromise and requiring a two-thirds majority in Congress for the admission of new states, declarations of war, and creating laws restricting trade. The Federalists also discussed their grievances with the Louisiana Purchase and the Embargo of 1807. However, weeks after the convention's end, news of Major General Andrew Jackson's overwhelming victory in New Orleans swept over the Northeast, discrediting and disgracing the Federalists, resulting in their elimination as a major national political force. George Bliss (November 16, 1793 – April 19, 1873) was an American businessman and politician and served as Speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives and President of the Massachusetts Senate. Early life Bliss, the eldest son of Hon. George Bliss, by his first wife, Hannah, (daughter of Dr. John Clark, of Lebanon, Conn), was born in Springfield, Mass., November 16, 1793. Education Bliss graduated from Yale College in 1812. George Ripley Bliss
Reverend George Ripley Bliss (June 20, 1816 – March 21, 1893) was an American cleric and educator. He served twice as president of Bucknell University. Early life George R. Bliss was born in Sherburne, New York on June 20, 1816. He graduated from Hamilton College and Hamilton Theological Seminary and became a Baptist clergyman. Career Bliss taught Greek (filling the department chair from 1849 to 1874), Latin, and biblical exegesis at Bucknell and at Crozer Theological Seminary, and he served as librarian of Bucknell University. He served as university president twice, in 1857–1858 and 1871–72. Death and burial Bliss died in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania on March 21, 1893. He was buried at Lewisburg Cemetery. Family Bliss was married to Mary Ann Raymond Bliss (1821 - 1912). One of their 13 children, General Tasker Howard Bliss was most notable.
