George Benson
George Washington Benson (born March 22, 1943) is an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He began his professional career at the age of 19 as a jazz guitarist. A former child prodigy, Benson first came to prominence in the 1960s, playing soul jazz with Jack McDuff and others. He then launched a successful solo career, alternating between jazz, pop, R&B singing, and scat singing. His album ''Breezin''' was certified triple-platinum, hitting no. 1 on the ''Billboard'' album chart in 1976. His concerts were well attended through the 1980s, and he still has a large following. George Benson (dean)
George Benson (1614 – 24 August 1692) was the prebendary and dean of Hereford from 1672 to 1691. The Bensons were a family of considerable position with representatives in Kendal and Ambleside. John Benson left London in the 16th century around the end of the reign of Elizabeth I and settled in Great Salkeld, Cumberland. He had 13 sons and from his eldest descended the Bingley lords. George Benson senior was from the branch of the family that settled in Kendal. He was for some time Canon of Hereford, and his son, George Benson, became Canon of Worcester and Dean of Hereford. George Benson (1 September 1699 Great Salkeld – 6 April 1762 London) was an English Presbyterian pastor and theologian who was noted for his publications on the Christian epistles. Benson often conversed with dignitaries such as Lord Chancellor Peter King and Edmund Law, the bishop of Carlisle. According to Alexander Balloch Grosart, writing in the ''Dictionary of National Biography'', Benson's views were "Socinian" though at this period the term is often confused with Arian. Life Benson was born at Great Salkeld, Cumberland, on 1 September 1699. His grandfather, also George Benson, served with the Roundheads during the English Civil War. George Benson (17 November 1856 – 23 October 1935) was a British architect and antiquarian. Biography Born in Liverpool in 1856, Benson's moved to York in his early years where his father (George Benson, b.1815) was an innkeeper on Blossom Street. Benson worked as an architect and was an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects for thirty years between 1898 and 1928. Benson was amember of the Yorkshire Archaeological and Historical Society and served on its Roman Antiquities and Ancient Monuments Committees. He was an active member of the Yorkshire Architectural and York Archaeological Society and worked with William Arthur Evelyn, Edwin Ridsdale Tate, Canon Solloway and TP Cooper to "revive the activities of the Society". George Courtney Benson (1886–1960) was an Australian painter, muralist and cartoonist, and an official war artist during World War I. Biography George Courtney Benson was born in Collingwood, Melbourne in 1886 to Richard and Mary ( Murdoch) Benson. He studied at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School from 1903. Benson enlisted in the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade of the Australian Imperial Force in September 1914 and saw active duty in the Mediterranean. He took sketches of the landscape prior to the allied invasion at Gallipoli. Benson was commissioned as an Australian official war artists in April 1918, and after the end of the war worked at the Australian War Records Section in London. A scrapbook of 140 sketches drawn by Benson during his time in the First World War are now held by the Australian War Memorial. Sir George Benson (3 May 1889 – 17 August 1973) was a British Labour Party politician. The son of T. D. Benson, treasurer of the Independent Labour Party (ILP), George was educated at Manchester Grammar School, Manchester and became clerk in an estate office. During the First World War he was imprisoned as a conscientious objector. He served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Chesterfield from 1929 to 1931, and from 1935 to 1964 and was knighted in 1958.
