George Bain (artist)
George Bain (1881–1968), born in Scrabster in Caithness, Scotland, was an artist and art teacher who made an important and influential contribution to the revival of interest in Celtic and Insular art which began in the 19th century Biography In 1888 Bain left Scrabster with his family. They had intended to emigrate to Canada but, during a stop in Leith, the Bains met with a cousin who persuaded them to settle in Edinburgh instead. After leaving school, Bain joined a firm of printers in Edinburgh while, between the age of 15 and 21, studying art on a part-time basis, attending the School of Applied Art and the Edinburgh School of Art. His first exhibited work as a painter was in 1900 at the Royal Scottish Academy. In 1902 he obtained a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London. George Bain (journalist)
George Charles Stewart Bain (January 29, 1920 May 14, 2006) was a Canadian journalist, and the first to be named a national affairs correspondent at any Canadian newspaper. Bain was described by Allan Fotheringham as being "the wittiest columnist ever to grace Ottawa," and Doug Fisher said that Bain was "the closest to the perfect columnist" and the columnist he tried to emulate. Career Born in Toronto, Ontario, he started with the '' Toronto Telegram'' at the age of sixteen, eventually becoming a general reporter and City Hall reporter. During World War II, he served with the Royal Canadian Air Force as a bomber pilot. After the war, in 1945, he joined ''The Globe and Mail'' as a general reporter for City Hall and Provincial Affairs in October 1945. He became a National Affairs reporter and columnist in 1952, and then served as a foreign correspondent in London (19571960) and Washington (19601964) before returning to the Ottawa bureau. George Grantham Bain
George Grantham Bain (January 7, 1865 – April 20, 1944) was a New York City photographer. He was known as "the father of foreign photographic news". Biography He was born in Chicago, Illinois, on January 7, 1865, to George Bain and Clara Mather. His family moved from Chicago to St. Louis, Missouri. He attended Saint Louis University as an undergraduate to study chemistry, and later attained a law degree from the same institution. After graduation, Bain became a reporter at the '' St. Louis Globe-Democrat''. The following year he moved to the ''St. Louis Post-Dispatch'', where he became the Washington, DC correspondent. He worked for United Press before he started the Bain News Service in 1898. He died at age 79, on April 20, 1944, at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan.
