George Ainslie (Virginia Politician)
George Ainslie (October 10, 1868 – July 18, 1931) was the mayor of Richmond, Virginia, from 1912 until 1924. He was of English ancestry, all of which had been in Virginia since the 17th century. Education Ainslie received a B.S. at Virginia Military Institute in 1890 and an L.L.B. at the University of Virginia in 1893. Mayor of Richmond During Ainslie's administration, annexation nearly doubled Richmond's size. As a result of this expansion, Ainslie pursued an ambitious program of public improvements, including completion of a new waterworks and creation of a fully motorized fire department. He also advocated amendments to the Richmond city charter that in 1919 strengthened the power of the mayor's office. David Lloyd George
David Lloyd George, 1st Earl Lloyd-George of Dwyfor, (17 January 1863 – 26 March 1945) was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1916 to 1922. He was a Liberal Party politician from Wales, known for leading the United Kingdom during the First World War, social reform policies including the National Insurance Act 1911, his role in the Paris Peace Conference, and negotiating the establishment of the Irish Free State. Early in his career, he was known for the disestablishment of the Church of England in Wales and support of Welsh devolution. He was the last Liberal Party prime minister; the party fell into third party status shortly after the end of his premiership. The ''Dictionary of Virginia Biography'' (''DVB'') is a multivolume biographical reference work published by the Library of Virginia that covers aspects of Virginia's history and culture since 1607. The work was intended to run for a projected fourteen volumes, but only three volumes were published, the last in 2006. Later articles are published online, some on the library's website, and others through encyclopediavirginia.org. A finding aid is available. Because for two and a half centuries of its history Virginia encompassed a much larger territory than it does today, the ''DVB'' defines Virginia as the current state boundaries plus Kentucky before its separate statehood in 1792 and West Virginia before its separate statehood in 1863. Ferdinand Foch
Ferdinand Foch ( , ; 2 October 1851 – 20 March 1929) was a French general and military theorist who served as the Supreme Allied Commander during the First World War. An aggressive, even reckless commander at the First Marne, Flanders and Artois campaigns of 1914–1916, Foch became the Allied Commander-in-Chief in late March 1918 in the face of the all-out German spring offensive, which pushed the Allies back using fresh soldiers and new tactics that trenches could not withstand. He successfully coordinated the French, British and American efforts into a coherent whole, deftly handling his strategic reserves. He stopped the German offensive and launched a war-winning counterattack. In November 1918, Marshal Foch accepted the German cessation of hostilities and was present at the Armistice of 11 November 1918. John Fulmer Bright
John Fulmer Bright (November 17, 1877 – December 29, 1953) was an American politician and physician. Bright received an M.D. from the Medical College of Virginia in 1898. He sat in the Virginia House of Delegates representing the city of Richmond in 1922. Bright served as mayor of Richmond 1924–1940. As mayor, He believed in limited government and frequently vetoed development projects. He also opposed the federal housing program during the Great Depression. Largely in response to the way he had used his veto power, in 1948 a new city charter weakened the mayor's power by implementing a city manager system and replaced the bicameral city council with a single nine-person body whose members were elected at large. English Americans (historically known as Anglo-Americans) are Americans whose ancestry originates wholly or partly in England.
