Georg Gebel (the Elder)
Georg Gebel (1685–1750) was a German composer, organist, and innovator in the construction of keyboard instruments. Gebel was born in Breslau, and became a tailor's apprentice, but ran away from the apprenticeship to study music. He studied under Winkler and Krause, and became organist at Brieg in 1709 and at Breslau in 1713. He died in Breslau in 1750. He invented a clavichord with quarter tones and a clavicymbalum with a pedal keyboard. His numerous compositions were not published, but included an oratorio, cantata A cantata (; ; literally "sung", past participle feminine singular of the Italian verb ''cantare'', "to sing") is a vocal composition with an instrumental accompaniment, typically in several movements, often involving a choir. Composer
A composer is a person who writes music. The term is especially used to indicate composers of Western classical music, or those who are composers by occupation. Many composers are, or were, also skilled performers of music. Etymology and Definition The term is descended from Latin, ''compōnō''; literally "one who puts together". Baker's Biographical Dictionary Of Musicians
''Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians'' is a major reference work in the field of music, originally compiled by Theodore Baker, PhD, and published in 1900 by G. Schirmer, Inc. The ninth edition, the most recent edition, was published in 2001 — years after the first edition. Edition history Leading up to the initial publication of ''Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians'', Baker had compiled and edited three editions of ''A Dictionary of Musical Terms'' — published 1895, 1896, and 1897, respectively, by G.
