General Counsel Of The Department Of The Air Force
The General Counsel of the Department of the Air Force (acronym SAF/GC) is the chief legal officer of the U.S. Department of the Air Force. By U.S. law, the General Counsel of the Department of the Air Force is appointed from civilian life by the President of the United States upon the advice and consent of the United States Senate, and performs such duties as the Secretary of the Air Force specifies. According to Secretary of the Air Force Order No. 111.5, dated July 14, 2005, "The General Counsel is the chief legal officer and chief ethics official of the Department of the Air Force. Legal opinions issued by the Office of the General Counsel shall be the controlling opinions of the Department of the Air Force. A general counsel, also known as chief counsel or chief legal officer (CLO), is the chief in-house lawyer for a company or a governmental department. In a company, the person holding the position typically reports directly to the CEO, and their duties involve overseeing and identifying the legal issues in all departments and their interrelation, including engineering, design, marketing, sales, distribution, credit, finance, human resources and production, as well as corporate governance and business policy. This would naturally require in most cases reporting directly to the owner or CEO overseeing the very business on which the CLO is expected to be familiar with and advise on the most confidential level. Peter Justus Beshar is an American attorney who has served as general counsel of the Department of the Air Force since March 18, 2022. Beshar has previously worked in various roles at Marsh McLennan for 17 years. Education Beshar earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University in 1984 and a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School in 1989. Career Beshar served as a law clerk for Judge Vincent L. Broderick. In 1992 and 1993, Beshar worked as an advisor to Secretary of State Cyrus Vance.
