Geiyo Islands
The are a group of islands in the Seto Inland Sea, under the administration of Hiroshima Prefecture and Ehime Prefecture. Some of the largest islands in archipelago are connected by the Nishiseto Expressway bridge system connecting Honshu and Shikoku. The Geiyo Archipelago is roughly defined as lying in the western part of Seto Inland Sea, from to . A narrower definition of the archipelago only includes the islands between the former provinces of Iyo and Bizen. Shimanami Kaidō
The , often called the is an expressway in Japan that connects Onomichi, Hiroshima and Imabari, Ehime, going through nine of the Geiyo Islands, including Ōshima, Ōmishima, and Innoshima. The road and multiple bridges crossing across the Seto Inland Sea is one of the three main transportation links of the Honshū–Shikoku Bridge Project, constructed between the islands of Honshu and Shikoku. The expressway contains fifty-five bridges, including the Kurushima Kaikyō Bridge, the world's longest series of suspension bridges, and the Tatara Bridge, the world's fourth longest cable-stayed bridge. The route is famed for its scenic views and can be crossed by bicycles, mopeds and pedestrians as well as cars. It was opened on May 1, 1999, and is long, sporting four lanes with a separated path for pedestrians and cyclists. Mukaishima Island, Hiroshima
is the northernmost island in Geiyo Islands chain accommodating Nishiseto Expressway connecting Honshu and Shikoku islands. Its coasts are washed by Seto Inland Sea. NASA Earth Observatory
NASA Earth Observatory is an online publishing outlet for NASA which was created in 1999. It is the principal source of satellite imagery and other scientific information pertaining to the climate and the Environment (biophysical), environment which are being provided by NASA for consumption by the general public. Imperial Japanese Naval Academy
The was a school established to train line officers for the Imperial Japanese Navy. It was originally located in Nagasaki, moved to Yokohama in 1866, and was relocated to Tsukiji, Tokyo in 1869. It moved to Etajima, Hiroshima in 1888. Students studied for three or four years, and upon graduation were ordered (warranted) as Midshipmen, commissioned to the rank of Ensign/ Acting Sub-Lieutenant after a period of active duty and an overseas cruise. In 1943, a separate school for naval aviation was opened in Iwakuni, and in 1944, another naval aviation school was established in Maizuru. The Academy was closed in 1945, when the Imperial Japanese Navy was abolished. The Naval Academy Etajima opened in 1956 and the site now serves as the location for Officer Candidate School of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. Ninoshima
Ninoshima () is an island in the Seto Inland Sea, located near Hiroshima. Gakuen-mae pier on Ninoshima is located 4 km from Hiroshima (Ujina) Port. It takes only half an hour to get to Ninoshima from wharf 4 of Hiroshima Port (Ujina Port) by ferry. The island is 3.87 km2 in size, and topped with the mountain Aki-no-Kofuji (278 m). In Japanese, the mountain's name means "Little Fuji of Aki" (the former name of the Hiroshima area). The name of the island means "resemblance island", as the shape of the island and its mountain resemble Mount Fuji. History Military facilities were established in Ninoshima in the 19th century. is an island in the western part of the Inland Sea of Japan, located in the northwest of Hiroshima Bay. It is popularly known as , which in Japanese means "Shrine Island". The island is one of Hayashi Gahō's Three Views of Japan specified in 1643. Itsukushima is part of the city of Hatsukaichi in Hiroshima Prefecture. Uoshima, Ehime
was a village located in Ochi District, Ehime Prefecture, Japan. As of 2003, the village had an estimated population of 285 and a density of 89.91 persons per km2. The total area was 3.17 km2. Tsushima, Ehime
was a town located in Kitauwa District, Ehime Prefecture, Japan. As of 2003, the town had an estimated population of 13,284 and a density of 60.10 persons per km². The total area was 221.05 km². On August 1, 2005, Tsushima, along with the towns of Mima and Yoshida (all from Kitauwa District), was merged into the expanded city of Uwajima. Tsushima residents are also known for pearl farming and fish farming, as well as being part of the prefecture's mikan growing industry. Nanryakuen Park is a beautiful place to go for a walk when you're there. There's also a children's amusement area called Playland across the street. Tourism Tsushima is known for the Iwamatsu River and the festival, "Shirauo Matsuri", they have each year where people eat tiny, live fish. Ōkunoshima
is a small island in the Inland Sea of Japan. It is considered to be part of the city of Takehara, Hiroshima Prefecture. It is accessible by ferry from Tadanoumi and Ōmishima. There are campsites, walking trails and places of historical interest on the island. It is often called because of the numerous rabbits that roam the island. The rabbits are rather tame and will approach humans. Ōkunoshima played a key role during World War II as a poison gas factory for much of the chemical warfare that was carried out in China. Okamura Island
is a small island in the Inland Sea of Japan. Administratively, it is part of the city of Imabari, Ehime Prefecture. The island is famous for mikan and butterflies. Nii Ōshima
, or sometimes just , is an inhabited island located roughly 1.5 kilometers northeast of the city of Niihama (which it is officially a part of) in Ehime Prefecture, Japan. Geography Nii Ōshima is located in the Seto Inland Sea. It has a circumference of approximately 8 kilometers and a total area of . The island is mostly hilly, with its highest point at 146.48 meters above sea level. The northern part of the island is covered with dense forests, has many cliffs. The main settlement is in the southern part of the island. There is a ferry that runs between Nii Ōshima and Niihama approximately once every hour, taking fifteen minutes to complete a one-way journey.
