Gasparillo
Gasparillo is a settlement in southern Trinidad. It lies east of Pointe-à-Pierre and northeast of San Fernando. The population is 16,426. The name Gasparillo is applied not only to Gasparillo area, but also the surrounding communities including Bonne Aventure, Reform and Whiteland. Trinidadians do not use Spanish sounds when saying Gasparillo. Correct local pronunciation is "gas-PARR-ri-low." Gasparillo is administrated by Couva–Tabaquite–Talparo Regional Corporation and Princes Town Regional Corporation. Gasparillo owes much of its size to its proximity to the Petrotrin oil refinery at Pointe-à-Pierre. Gasparillo Island
Gasparillo is a small island in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. It is one of the Bocas Islands (also referred to as Dragons' Teeth), which lie in the ''Bocas del Dragón'' (Spanish for ''Dragon's Mouths'') between the main island of Trinidad and Venezuela. The island is currently uninhabited. Characteristics Gasparillo is actually made up of two islands separated by several metres of rocks. However the second island is very small and is not independently named. The main island a little over 200 metres in length but is very narrow, less than 50 metres at its widest point, approximately 8,000 m2 in area. It is, as with most islands around the Paria Peninsular, covered with dry forest vegetation, and composed of a limestone bedrock with caves. Trinidad Government Railway
The Trinidad Government Railway existed between 1876 and 28 December 1968. Originally built to connect Port of Spain with Arima, the railway was extended to Couva in 1880, San Fernando in 1882, Cunapo (now Sangre Grande) in 1897, Tabaquite in 1898, Siparia in 1913 and Rio Claro in 1914. Background The first attempt to establish a railway was a private affair in 1846 by the Trinidad Railway Company. ''Esenbeckia'' is a genus of flowering plants in the rue family, Rutaceae. All species in the genus are native to the Americas, with the highest diversity in South America. They are commonly known as jopoy, the Mayan word for '' E. berlandieri'', or gasparillo (Spanish). Taxonomy The generic name commemorates German naturalist Christian Gottfried Daniel Nees von Esenbeck (1776 - 1858). The Takhtajan system placed the genus in the subfamily Rutoideae, while Germplasm Resources Information Network placed it in the subfamily Toddalioideae. Couva–Tabaquite–Talparo is one of the nine regions of Trinidad and Tobago, and one of the five regions which form the Gulf of Paria coastline on Trinidad's West Coast.
