''Gas, Oil and Water'' is a 1922 American silent comedy film directed by Charles Ray and written by Richard Andres. The film stars Charles Ray, Otto Hoffman, Charlotte Pierce, R. Henry Grey, William A. Carroll, and Dick Sutherland. The film was released in March 1922, by Associated First National Pictures. Plot As described in a film magazine, Henry Jones (Hoffman) runs a hotel near the Mexico–United States border that is popular with tourists. His daughter Susie (Pierce) is attracted to George Oliver Watson (Ray), a young man who has just opened a new gas station across the road. However, George is actually a U.S. Secret Service agent sent to the border to catch a band of smugglers who have been operating in that section. George watches two hotel guests who are acting suspiciously. His observations reveal several others around the place who appear to be in league with the two. Charles Ray (actor)
Charles Edgar Ray (March 15, 1891 – November 23, 1943) was an American actor, director, producer, and screenwriter. Ray rose to fame during the mid-1910s portraying young, wholesome hicks in silent comedy films. Early life Ray was born in Jacksonville, Illinois, and moved to Springfield as a child where he attended elementary school. He then moved to Needles, California, for a time before finally relocating to Los Angeles where he finished his education. He began his career on the stage before working for director Thomas H. Ince as a film extra in December 1912. He appeared in several bit parts before moving on to supporting roles. Ray's break came in 1915 when he appeared opposite Frank Keenan in the historical war drama '' The Coward''. Otto Hoffman
Otto F. Hoffman (May 2, 1879 – June 23, 1944) was an American film actor. He appeared in almost 200 films between 1915 and 1944. He was born in New York City and died in Los Angeles, California, from lung cancer. Hoffman's Broadway credits include ''The Strange Woman'' (1913), ''The Spring Maid'' (1910), and ''A Broken Idol'' (1909). He was also active in stock theater productions. Hoffman debuted in film in 1906 in a production of the Edison Company in New York. Later he worked for Goldwyn Pictures.
