Gary Smith (rugby League)
Gary Smith is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s and 1990s. A Queensland State of Origin representative forward, he played club football in the Brisbane Rugby League for Brothers and in the New South Wales Rugby League for the North Sydney Bears. Playing career After playing junior football for Nanango, Smith made his senior debut at the age of 17 for the Caloundra club before playing in the Brisbane Rugby League Premiership for the Brothers club. Smith toured New Zealand with Queensland in 1987, playing in a match against the Kiwis. Smith was also selected to play for Queensland in the 1987 State of Origin series' first match. At the end if the 1987 season Smith played in Brothers' BRL Grand final victory. Smith signed with the North Sydney Bears from the 1988 NSWRL season. Nanango, Queensland
Nanango is a rural town and locality in the South Burnett Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Nanango had a population of 3,599 people. Geography Nanango is situated north-west of the state capital, Brisbane, at the junction of the D'Aguilar Highway with the Burnett Highway. Sandy Creek () meanders through the town. The locality is part of the Burnett River catchment. The productive lands of the catchment feature sedimentary floodplains. The rich fertile soils of the floodplains are the agricultural and resource backbone of the region. 1988 NSWRL Season
The 1988 NSWRL season was the 81st season of professional rugby league football in Australia, and saw the first expansion of the New South Wales Rugby League Premiership outside the borders of New South Wales, and another expansion outside of Sydney, with the addition of three new teams: the Brisbane Broncos, Newcastle Knights and Gold Coast-Tweed Giants. The largest NSWRL premiership yet, sixteen clubs competed during the 1988 season, with the J J Giltinan Shield for minor premiers going to Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks. The finals culminated in a grand final for the Winfield Cup between the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and Balmain Tigers. This season NSWRL teams also competed for the 1988 Panasonic Cup. There have been over 200 rugby league footballers who have played for Queensland in State of Origin since its inception in 1980. All players who have been selected to debut for the Queensland in State of Origin matches have been assigned a number by the Queensland Rugby League. Sydney Football Stadium (1988)
The Sydney Football Stadium, commercially known as Allianz Stadium and previously Aussie Stadium, was a football stadium in Moore Park, Sydney, Australia. Built in 1988 next to the Sydney Cricket Ground, the stadium was Sydney's premier rectangular field venue for rugby league, rugby union, and soccer. The Kangaroos, the Wallabies, and the Socceroos occasionally played at the stadium, while the Sydney Roosters, NSW Waratahs, and Sydney FC were the ground's major tenants. The stadium usually held both National Rugby League semi finals and one preliminary final, and also held the annual pre-season Charity Shield football match between South Sydney and St George Illawarra for a number of years. Balmain Tigers
The Balmain Tigers (also known as the Sydney Tigers from 1995–96) are a rugby league club based in the inner-western Sydney suburb of Balmain. They were a founding member of the New South Wales Rugby League and one of the most successful in the history of the premiership, with eleven titles. In 1999 they formed a joint venture club with the Western Suburbs Magpies club to form the Wests Tigers for competition in the National Rugby League (NRL). They no longer field any senior teams in the lower divisions. At the time of the joint venture only South Sydney Rabbitohs and the St George Dragons had won more titles than the Tigers.
