Garrya Ovata
''Garrya ovata'', with the common names eggleaf silktassel, Mexican silktassel, and eggleaf garrya, is a plant species native to New Mexico, Texas, and to central and northern Mexico. The plant is usually found as an understory species in moist forests, such as Madrean pine-oak woodlands. Description ''Garrya ovata'' is a shrub up to tall and wide. The leaves are thick and leathery, ovate, up to long, tomentose on both sides when young, at maturity glabrous above but tomentose below. Flowers are arranged in pendulous (hanging) racemes, and are green. It blooms in March through May. Fruits are dark blue, spherical, up to in diameter. George Bentham
George Bentham (22 September 1800 – 10 September 1884) was an English botanist, described by the weed botanist Duane Isely as "the premier systematic botanist of the nineteenth century". Born into a distinguished family, he initially studied law, but had a fascination with botany from an early age, which he soon pursued, becoming president of the Linnaean Society in 1861, and a fellow of the Royal Society in 1862. He was the author of a number of important botanical works, particularly flora. He is best known for his taxonomic classification of plants in collaboration with Joseph Dalton Hooker, his ''Genera Plantarum'' (1862–1883). He died in London in 1884. Garryales
The Garryales are a small order of dicotyledons, including only two families and three genera. Description Garryales are woody plants that are either hairless or have very fine hairs. Members of the family Garryaceae are evergreen, whereas those of the Eucommiaceae are deciduous and produce latex. All members are dioecious. Taxonomy These belong among the asterids. Under the Cronquist system, the Garryaceae were placed among the Cornales. The Eucommiaceae were given their own order and placed among the Hamamelidae. The Oncothecaceae family has been associated with Garryales, though the link is not strong enough to prove they are related. Subdivisions The order is made up of two families which, between them, contain three genera.
