Gardendale High School
Gardendale High School (GHS) is a public high school located in the Birmingham, Alabama suburb of Gardendale. It is currently operated by the Jefferson County Board of Education. GHS was established in 1956 as a result of population growth in the area. Until this time, local students mostly attended Mortimer Jordan High School in nearby Morris. The school mascot/nickname is "Rockets." The name was chosen by vote of the first student body in school history and was chosen to honor the U.S. Space and Rocket program, which at the time was actively pursuing the goal of placing a man on the moon. The school colors are maroon and gray. Campus A merger was proposed in 2007 between GHS and nearby Fultondale High School, but it was cancelled by Superintendent Phil Hammonds. Jefferson County Board Of Education (Alabama)
The Jefferson County School System is the second-largest public school system in Alabama, United States. It is the third oldest school system in Jefferson County preceded only by the Birmingham and Bessemer School Systems. The Jefferson County School System was created in 1896, and initially served all unincorporated communities and cities in the county other than Birmingham and Bessemer. Beginning in the late 1960s and early 1970s various other cities began to establish their own separate systems (i.e., Homewood, Midfield, Vestavia Hills, Hoover, etc.). Raymond Alan Ogg (July 5, 1967 – November 1, 2009) was an American professional basketball player who spent three seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is the University of Alabama at Birmingham Blazers' career shot-blocking leader with 266 blocks over four college seasons. He was born in Lancaster, Ohio. The 7'2" and 240-pound center Gardendale High School grad played collegiate basketball for the UAB Blazers and started his professional career when he signed with the Miami Heat as an undrafted rookie free agent during the 1990–91 NBA season. He became a fan favorite during his two seasons in Miami and split his playing time in his third and final NBA season with the Milwaukee Bucks and the Washington Bullets. Kevin Drake (born March 26, 1979) is an American musician, who is best known for being one of the original touring guitarists in the rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars. He grew up in Los Angeles, California, and started playing piano around five years of age. At 10 he started learning the guitar. He now plays multiple instruments and works with music production.
