Galong Railway Station
Galong is a heritage-listed closed railway station located on the Main South railway line in New South Wales, Australia. It served the village of Galong. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. History The original station opened in 1877. However, it was replaced by a new station on a deviation which opened in 1916. Galong was the location of the junction of the branch railway to Boorowa, which closed to passenger services in 1974. Galong, New South Wales
Galong is a village in New South Wales, Australia, in Hilltops Council. It is a typical Australian village located 1 hour's drive from the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Mining The major industry in the town is the limestone open-cut mine. The Galong deposit was first mined in 1885 with significant mining activity in the 1920s producing burnt lime or quicklime, which is used in the production of cement. The mine re-opened in the 1960s and again in 1994. In 2001, the lease was altered to extend the mineable area of land from ; resources of 20 million tonnes of limestone have been defined within the proposed limit of mining. In 2003, the mine was acquired by Boral. It now produces lime for agricultural lime used for farming canola and grains; agricultural lime is used for remediating soil acidity, a major problem threatening the productivity and sustainability of agriculture in many parts of the state. Boorowa Railway Line
The Boorowa railway line is a closed railway line in New South Wales, Australia. The line ran for north to the town of Boorowa from the Main South railway line at Galong. Construction The Main Southern Railway was extended through the Galong area in 1877. Residents of Burrowa (as the ultimate terminus of the branch line under discussion was then known) began agitation for their own branch line. Subsequently, in February, 1884, a Public Meeting was held in Burrowa and it was resolved to send a deputation to the Minister for Public Works to voice their feelings. By the following August, the Galong to Burrowa branch was included in a list of branch railways under consideration. On 28 October 1884, Parliament confirmed the line as part of list of lines to be constructed in the near future. But, that was where it stopped. The New South Wales State Heritage Register, also known as NSW State Heritage Register, is a heritage list of places in the state of New South Wales, Australia, that are protected by New South Wales legislation, generally covered by the Heritage Act 1977 and its 2010 amendments. The register is administered by the Heritage Council of NSW via Heritage NSW, a division of the Government of New South Wales Department of Planning and Environment. The register was created in 1999 and includes items protected by heritage schedules that relate to the State, and to regional and to local environmental plans.
