Galicoma Massacre
The Galikoma massacre was an indiscriminate killing of civilians perpetrated by the Tigray Defense Forces (TDF) in the village of Galikoma (or Galicoma) in the Afar Region of Ethiopia during the Tigray War, on 5 August 2021. Galikoma is a village in the Gulina district of Fanti zone in Afar Region. Background Massacre An Ethiopian Human Rights Commission investigation found that on the morning of 5 August 2021, the TDF indiscriminately killed 107 civilians, including 27 children, and injured 35 civilians during an offensive in Galikoma. Civilians were assaulted by artillery and gunfire. According to Afar regional authorities, more than 200 civilians, including 107 children, were killed by the TDF. Survivors told hospital officials that they were shot by TDF fighters. Afar Region
The Afar Region (; aa, Qafar Rakaakayak; am, አፋር ክልል), formerly known as Region 2, is a regional state in northeastern Ethiopia and the homeland of the Afar people. Its capital is the planned city of Semera, which lies on the paved Awash– Assab highway. The Afar Triangle, the northern part of which is the Danakil Depression, is part of the Great Rift Valley of Ethiopia, and is located in the north of the region. It has the lowest point in Ethiopia and one of the lowest in Africa. The southern part of the region consists of the valley of the Awash River, which empties into a string of lakes along the Ethiopian–Djibouti border. Tigray War
The Tigray War; ; . was an armed conflict that lasted from 3 November 2020 to 3 November 2022. The war was primarily fought in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia between the Ethiopian federal government and Eritrea on one side, and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) on the other. After years of increased tensions and hostilities between the TPLF and the governments of Ethiopia and Eritrea, fighting began when Tigrayan security forces attacked the Northern Command headquarters of the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF), alongside a number of other bases in Tigray. Afar People
The Afar ( aa, Qafár), also known as the Danakil, Adali and Odali, are a Cushitic-speaking ethnic group inhabiting the Horn of Africa. They primarily live in the Afar Region of Ethiopia and in northern Djibouti, as well as the entire southern coast of Eritrea. The Afar speak the Afar language, which is part of the Cushitic branch of the Afroasiatic family. Afars are the only inhabitants of the Horn of Africa whose traditional territories border both the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Gulina (Ethiopian District)
Gulina is one of the Districts of Ethiopia, or ''woredas'', in the Afar Region of Ethiopia. Part of the Administrative Zone 4, Gulina is located near the base of the eastern escarpment of the Ethiopian highlands, and bordered on the south by Ewa, on the west by the Amhara Region, on the north by Yalo, on the northeast by Teru, and on the east by Aura. The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) ( am, የኢትዮጵያ ሰብዓዊ መብቶች ኮሚሽን) is a national human rights institution (NHRI) established by the Ethiopian government. The EHRC is charged with promoting human rights and investigating human rights abuses in Ethiopia. The EHRC states organizational independence as one of its values.
