Gabrielle Upton (July 6, 1921 – September 13, 2022) was a Canadian-born American screenwriter and actress, best known for her writing work on the 1959 film ''Gidget'', as well television shows such as ''The Loretta Young Show'', ''Ben Casey'', and '' The Virginian''. Life and career Upton was born in Vancouver, British Columbia on July 6, 1921. By 1953, Upton had turned from acting to screenwriting, a move that spawned more offers of work for her in television, film and radio. During the 1950s, Upton worked in the United Kingdom, writing scripts for the anthology series ''Douglas Fairbanks Presents''. Her husband was actor turned sound man Julian Upton, who was also born in Vancouver. He predeceased her in 2016, aged 94. ''Gidget'' is a 1959 American CinemaScope comedy film.''Variety'' film review; March 18, 1959, page 6.'' Harrison's Reports'' film review; March 21, 1959, page 46. The picture stars Sandra Dee, Cliff Robertson, James Darren, Arthur O'Connell and The Four Preps. in a story about a teenager's initiation into the California surf culture and her romance with a young surfer. The film—directed by Paul Wendkos—was the first of many screen appearances by the character Gidget, created by Hollywood writer Frederick Kohner (based on his daughter Kathy). The screenplay was written by Gillian Houghton, who was then head writer of the soap opera ''The Secret Storm'', using the pen name Gabrielle Upton. ''The Loretta Young Show'' (originally known as ''Letter to Loretta'') is an American anthology drama television series broadcast on Sunday nights from September 2, 1953, to June 4, 1961, on NBC for a total of 165 episodes. The series was hosted by actress Loretta Young, who also played the lead in various episodes. Series overview ''The Loretta Young Show'' was sponsored by Procter & Gamble for its first six seasons, from 1953 to 1959. After a dispute with her sponsor, Young found other sponsors to sustain her program: The Toni Company (1959-1961), Philip Morris (1959-1960), and Warner-Lambert's Listerine (1960-1961). ''Ben Casey'' is an American medical drama series that aired on ABC from 1961 to 1966. The show was known for its opening titles, which consisted of a hand drawing the symbols " ♂, ♀, ✳, †, ∞" on a chalkboard, as cast member Sam Jaffe uttered, "Man, woman, birth, death, infinity." Neurosurgeon Joseph Ransohoff served as a medical consultant for the show. ''The Virginian'' (later renamed ''The Men from Shiloh'' in its final year) is an American Western television series starring James Drury in the title role, along with Doug McClure, Lee J. Cobb, and others. It originally aired on NBC from 1962 to 1971, for a total of 249 episodes. ''Douglas Fairbanks Presents'' is a 1953-1956 syndicated half-hour dramatic anthology series. Douglas Fairbanks Jr. was the host, and he sometimes starred in episodes. It was also known as ''Douglas Fairbanks Jr. Presents''. A total of 117 episodes were filmed. The program was also broadcast in at least seven TV markets in Canada.
