NZR G Class (1928)
The NZR G class was a type of Garratt steam locomotive used in New Zealand, the only such Garratt type steam locomotives ever used by the New Zealand Railways (NZR). They were ordered to deal with traffic growth over the heavy gradients of the North Island Main Trunk (NIMT) and to do away with the use of banking engines on steep grades. They were one of the few Garratt designs to employ six cylinders. A mechanical stoker was used to feed coal into the locomotive. Introduction About 1913, General Manager E H Hiley considered the importing of 10 articulated Garratt engines and 10 Pacifics; however, with the success of the AB class and WAB class Pacifics no more was heard of Garratts. The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, sometimes colloquially called the G-Wagen (as an abbreviation of Geländewagen) is a four-wheel drive automobile manufactured by Magna Steyr (formerly Steyr-Daimler-Puch) in Austria and sold by Mercedes-Benz. Originally developed as a military jeep, military off-roader, later more luxury car, luxurious models were added to the line. The G class is a series of container ships built for OOCL. With a maximum theoretical capacity of 21,413 TEU they were the largest container ships in the world when they were built and the first ships with a capacity larger than 21,000 TEU. They took the title of largest container ships from ''Madrid Maersk'' (20,568 TEU). They have since been surpassed by other ships like the (23,756 TEU) and the (23,964 TEU). The G class, or "G-boat" also known as the Marine Alutech Watercat M8 landing craft ( fi, G-vene, sv, Gruppbåt) is a type of vessel in use by the Finnish Navy and the Swedish Navy. The Tasmanian Government Railways G class was a class of steam locomotives operated by the Tasmanian Government Railways. History In 1896, the Tasmanian Government Railways purchased two steam locomotives from Sharp, Stewart and Company, Glasgow to operate the North East Dundas Tramway. Shortly after entering service, G1 was destroyed on 17 May 1897 after the boiler exploded. The crew were killed and the boiler flung 30 metres into the air landing 230 metres away. A replacement arrived in 1900, assuming G1's identity.
