G.A. Miller Inc also known as GA Miller Construction Co. was a Tampa, Florida construction company. The company built twenty S. H. Kress & Co., Kress stores including in St. Petersburg, Florida; Lakeland, Florida; Tampa; Ybor City; Fort Myers; Daytona Beach; as well as in North and South Carolina; Georgia; Alabama; Spokane, Washington; and Billings, Montana. The company also constructed the Edwards Theater (now the Sarasota Opera House), the original Sarasota Herald building (now the Sarasota Woman's Exchange), and the Mira Mar Hotel (demolished in 1982). The company constructed M. Leo Elliott's First Bank and Trust Building (Sarasota) (1924) as well as its annex (1945). The building included steam heat "for every office", drinking fountains on each floor, and "the first passenger electric hydraulic elevator in Sarasota." A drinking fountain, also called a water fountain or water bubbler, is a fountain designed to provide drinking water. It consists of a basin with either continuously running water or a tap. The drinker bends down to the stream of water and swallows water directly from the stream. Polk Theatre
The Polk Theatre in Lakeland, Florida is a historic theater located at 121 South Florida Avenue. The 1,400-seat theatre was built in 1928 after the local business "boom" of the town had ended and despite the fact that the population was only 15,000 inhabitants. In 1982, a group of concerned people banded together to save the theatre from being razed due to low attendance. Local citizens formed a non-profit group, borrowed money, secured a grant from the state, and purchased the theatre for $300,000. The theatre has a mezzanine, a high balcony, a permanent backdrop of a "Venetian piazza," an orchestra pit, a ceiling against which images of twinkling stars are projected, and terrazzo flooring.
