Futureheads
The Futureheads are an English post-punk band from Sunderland, formed in 2000. The band consists of Ross Millard (vocals and guitar), David "Jaff" Craig (vocals and bass guitar) and brothers Barry Hyde (vocals and guitar) and Dave Hyde (drums). Their name comes from the title of The Flaming Lips album ''Hit to Death in the Future Head''. The band's influences include new wave and post-punk bands such as Gang of Four, Devo, XTC, Wire and Fugazi. Career Early days The band met at City of Sunderland College as a quartet consisting of Barry Hyde (vocals and guitar), David "Jaff" Craig (vocals and bass guitar), Peter Brewis (drums), and Ross Millard (vocals and guitar). Millard and Craig had been in another local band together previously. They used the Sunderland City Detached Youth Project building (where Brewis and Hyde worked) as a free practice space, fitting since the project was intended to get young people off the streets by using music. The Futureheads (album)
''The Futureheads'' is the debut studio album by British indie rock band The Futureheads. It was released on 12 July 2004 and spawned the singles "First Day", "Decent Days and Nights", "Meantime", and "Hounds of Love" (a Kate Bush cover). The album received critical praise and was re-released as a special edition in 2005 featuring a DVD and coming with a slightly re-designed cover in pink rather than the standard LP's grey. "Decent Days and Nights" and "Hounds of Love" were made available for the '' Rock Band'' platform on 9 March 2010. "Decent Days and Nights" also appeared on the ''Burnout 3'' soundtrack. "Meantime" was used in a second season episode of the hit TV series ''The O.C.'', and the film, '' Grandma's Boy''. The album was named the 33rd best record of 2004 by ''Pitchfork''. Nul Records
Nul Records is an independent record label set up by the post-punk revival band The Futureheads. The label is run by the four members of the Futureheads: Ross Millard, Dave Hyde, Barry Hyde, David "Jaff" Craig, as well as their two managers. Overview The Futureheads set up this record label some time after they split with their former record label, 679 Recordings, in late 2006, apparently disliking the direction 679 Recordings was taking them. Other sources, however, say that they were dropped by their record label because of poor sales. ''Nul Book Standard'' is an EP by British band The Futureheads. Their first official release, the EP came out in 2002 on the Project Cosmonaut label. Tracks A2 and B2 are different recordings to those found on their debut album. Background As the Futureheads were sending demo discs to record labels, Matt Wilkinson - who was working for Rough Trade Records at the time, and looking to set up a label of his own - got ahold of one of them. Wilkinson felt potential in the Sunderland quartet, even "started shaking it was that good" listening to the tape. He said about the band's music: Wilkinson created the Project Cosmonaut label with his friend Nick Ellson, and contacted guitarist and vocalist Ross Millard to sign them. Ross Millard
Ross Millard (born 22 July 1982) is an English musician and graphic designer, best known as guitarist and vocalist in The Futureheads. The band released their self-titled debut album in September 2004; their second album '' News & Tributes'' followed in May 2006, with their third album '' This Is Not the World'' released in May 2008 via the band's own label Nul Records. Millard attended Newcastle University, UK and graduated in 2003 with a BA(Hons) in English Literature. In 2007 Millard set up his own record label Longest Mile Records with friends Paul Reed and Nick Jackon. The label's first release, on 7" vinyl and digital, was the debut single "This Is Just The Nighttime, Andy!" from North-Eastern band The Catweasels. Field Music
Field Music are an English rock band from Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England, that formed in 2004. The band's core consists of brothers David Brewis and Peter Brewis. Andrew Moore was the original keyboard player. Their line-up has at times featured members of both Maxïmo Park and The Futureheads. Field Music have been called one of the few bands to outlast the indie guitar band explosion of the mid-2000s. Describing the band as "a truly artful proposition in the pseudo-filled landscape of contemporary Brit art-rock", music blog ''The Fantastic Hope'' puts this down in part to their "un-self-conscious anti-fashion stance", arguing that Field Music's "wayward pop from the fringes of academia is one of the most worthwhile ways in which rock//indie/guitar music/white pop/whatever might evolve". Sunderland, Tyne And Wear
Sunderland () is a port city in Tyne and Wear, England. It is the City of Sunderland's administrative centre and in the historic county of Durham. The city is from Newcastle-upon-Tyne and is on the River Wear's mouth to the North Sea. The river also flows through Durham roughly south-west of Sunderland City Centre. It is the only other city in the county and the second largest settlement in the North East after Newcastle upon Tyne. Locals from the city are sometimes known as Mackems.
