Future Farmer Records is an independent record label based in San Francisco, California. Inspired by skateboarding culture Future Farmer was founded in 1996 by San Joaquin Valley natives Jeff Klindt and Dennis Mitchell. Former label member M. Ward remains the label's biggest commercial success to date. Independent Record Label
An independent record label (or indie label) is a record label that operates without the funding or distribution of major record labels; they are a type of small- to medium-sized enterprise, or SME. The labels and artists are often represented by trade associations in their country or region, which in turn are represented by the international trade body, the Worldwide Independent Network (WIN). Many of the labels started as producers and distributors of specific genres of music, such as jazz music, or represent something new and non-mainstream, such as Elvis Presley in the early days. Indies release rock, soul, R&B, jazz, blues, gospel, reggae, hip hop, and world music. Wonderlick
Wonderlick is a Los Angeles-based indie rock band established in 2001 by former Too Much Joy members Tim Quirk and Jay Blumenfield. History Quirk and Blumenfield originally formed the band in December 2000 to record free music for a website, entitled "Susquehanna Hat Company", which they had set up to sell Too Much Joy merchandise. Quirk and Blumenfield recorded Wonderlick's music using Pro Tools in Oakland, California. Virgil Shaw
Virgil Shaw is an American singer-songwriter based in San Francisco. Shaw spent his early life in Fairfax, California. He released two country rock albums in the early 2000s, ''Quad Cities'' and ''Still Falling''. Early career He began his career in Arcata, California in the late 1980s as a member of the high energy speed-pop band Brent's T.V. He later moved to San Francisco where he played in the band Dieselhed from 1992 to 2000. When Dieselhed disbanded in 2000, Shaw began to perform and record as a solo artist, sometimes with the help of his backing band that he named "The Killer Views". After a stint in New York City, in 2006, he moved to Portland, Oregon. Recording albums Shaw's first album, ''Quad Cities'', was released in 2000 through Future Farmer Records. The High Strung
The High Strung is an American rock band from Detroit, Michigan, United States. The band is composed of lead singers and guitarists Josh Malerman and Mark Owen, guitarist Stephen Palmer, bassist Chad Stocker, and drummer Derek Berk. Malerman, Berk, and Owen attended Michigan State University in the late 1990s before moving to New York City. The band formed in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, when the members of the former East Lansing, Michigan, band The Masons changed their name and added Stocker to the roster. Owen left the band in 2005 and returned in 2016. Palmer joined the group shortly after the recording of ''Dragon Dicks'' in early 2010. Righteous Boy is the solo project of Magnus Sveningsson, bassist from Swedish rock group The Cardigans. Sveningsson began the project during the long hiatus between the Cardigans' '' Gran Turismo'' and ''Long Gone Before Daylight'' albums. The Minders
The Minders are an American band closely associated with The Elephant Six Collective. Started by Martyn Leaper in Denver, Colorado in 1996, the band's original members included Leaper on guitars and vocals, Rebecca Cole, on drums, Jeff Almond on guitar, and Marc Willhite on bass. Leaper formed the Minders in Denver along with Robert Schneider and Hilarie Sidney from The Apples in Stereo. Together they recorded ''Paper Plane EP'' in Athens, Georgia. Leaper recorded the "Come On & Hear 7" in Denver, Colorado, allegedly one of the fastest selling Elephant 6 releases in history. At this time, Leaper began attempting to form a more permanent band after releasing "Paper Plane" on 7". With a permanent lineup set, the band was able to release ''Rocket 58'' as an EP and sign to spinART Records, who released their first album ''Hooray for Tuesday'' in 1998. Kevin Salem
Kevin Salem is an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, and record producer. He began his career as a member of Dumptruck, and subsequently played with multiple artists on tour, including Yo La Tengo and Freedy Johnston, before beginning his solo career. Biography Salem grew up in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, where he decided he wanted to be a successful guitarist. Most of the bands in his hometown were cover bands, but he became interested in other types of music after traveling to New York City, where he saw Hüsker Dü, Tommy Keene, and The Replacements. His musical career began when he joined Dumptruck in 1986, after which he performed on their 1987 album ''For the Country'' (though not on any of their other albums).
