''Funky Miracle'' is a compilation album from the funk group The Meters on the Charly Records label, containing re-issued material mainly from their first three albums with Josie Records: '' The Meters'' (1969), '' Look-Ka Py Py'' (1969) and '' Struttin''' (1970). Struttin'
''Struttin is the third studio album by the funk group The Meters. It is the band's first album featuring vocal performances. Background The album was recorded in Cosimo Matassa's studio and released in 1970 by Josie Records. It is the band's first album featuring full vocal performances by Art Neville on three tracks, "Wichita Lineman", "Darling, Darling, Darling" and "Ride Your Pony". Reception Stephen Erlewine noted a continuation of the band's sound in comparison to previous albums and called it "organic, earthy funk". He noted a stylistic divergence in tracks "Joog", "Hand Clapping Song" and the vocal tracks. He called the music enjoyable but noted a lack of coherence in the song collection. Robert Christgau had a favorable view and wrote of the band's style: "The New Orleans M.G.'s swing, but not smoothly, the way a big band does--their Caribbean lilt is pure second-line, as elliptical as a saint's march." George Porter Jr
George Porter Jr. (born December 26, 1947) is an American musician, best known as the bassist and singer of The Meters. Along with Art Neville, Porter formed the group in the mid 1960s and came to be recognized as one of the progenitors of funk. The Meters disbanded in 1977, but reformed in 1989. The original group played the occasional reunion, with the Funky Meters, of which Porter and Neville are members, keeping the spirit alive, until Neville's retirement in 2018 and death the following year. Porter has his own group the Runnin' Pardners, and also other projects such as The Trio with Johnny Vidacovich, New Orleans Social Club, Deep Fried, and Porter Batiste Stoltz. Leo Nocentelli
Leo Nocentelli (born June 15, 1946) is an American musician and songwriter best known as a founding member and lead guitarist of the funk band The Meters. He wrote the original versions of several funk classics such as " Cissy Strut" and "Hey Pocky A-Way". As a session musician he has recorded with a variety of notable artists such as Dr. John, Robert Palmer and Etta James. He is the recipient of a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award as a member of The Meters. Career Nocentelli grew up in the Irish Channel and Seventh Ward neighborhoods of New Orleans. He was encouraged by his father to pursue music. He played ukulele at an early age and started on guitar at age twelve. He gravitated to jazz and was influenced by jazz guitarists Charlie Christian, Barney Kessel, Johnny Smith and Kenny Burrell. His first professional gig was at age thirteen. Art Neville
Arthur Lanon Neville Jr. (December 17, 1937 – July 22, 2019) was an American singer, songwriter and keyboardist from New Orleans. Neville was a staple of the New Orleans music scene for over five decades. He was the founder of the funk band The Meters whose musical style set the tone of New Orleans funk, a co-founder of the rock-soul-jazz band The Neville Brothers, and he later formed the spinoff group The Funky Meters. He performed on many recordings by notable artists from New Orleans and elsewhere, including Labelle (on "Lady Marmalade"), Paul McCartney, Lee Dorsey, Robert Palmer, Dr. John and Professor Longhair. Joseph "Ziggy" Modeliste (born December 28, 1948), also known as Zigaboo, is an American drummer best known as a founding member of the funk band the Meters. He is widely considered an innovator in the funk genre and New Orleans style drumming. The Meters' music had a defining role and set the stylistic tone of New Orleans funk. Due to his work with the band, Modeliste is credited as an integral part of bringing New Orleans second-line grooves into popular music. "Cissy Strut" is a 1969 funk instrumental by The Meters. Released as a single from their eponymous debut album, it reached No. 4 on the R&B chart and No. 23 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100. The song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2011, which honors "recordings of lasting qualitative or historical significance that are at least 25 years old". ''The A.V. Club'' called the song a "classic" deeply rooted in New Orleans music tradition. The Meters also released another single, "Sophisticated Cissy", from the same album. ''Look-Ka Py Py'' is the second studio album by the American funk group The Meters. The instrumental album was ranked number 218 on the ''Rolling Stone'' list of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in 2003, 220 on the 2012 revised list and 415 on the 2020 revised list. Reception Cub Koda of AllMusic said of the album and the band: "The second album by The Meters continues the sound that made them New Orleans legends." Ted Drozdowski of ''Rolling Stone'' characterized the album's sound as "clear, unhurried and certain". Funk
Funk is a music genre that originated in African American communities in the mid-1960s when musicians created a rhythmic, danceable new form of music through a mixture of various music genres that were popular among African Americans in the mid-20th century.
