Funeral Procession (painting)
''Funeral Procession'' is the name of a painting by Ellis Wilson, which went from obscurity to notoriety in 1986, when it was featured heavily in the episode " The Auction" of the TV series ''The Cosby Shows second season. In the episode, Clair Huxtable states that Wilson was her great-uncle, and that her grandmother had owned the painting until she had to sell it in order to pay her medical bills. After discovering that it is being sold at auction, she places an $11,000 winning bid and her husband Cliff hangs it over the fireplace in the family living room, where it stays for the remainder of the eight-season series. The actual painting is displayed as part of the Aaron Douglas Collection at the Amistad Research Center at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Ellis Wilson
Ellis Wilson (20 April 1899 – 2 January 1977) was an African-American artist associated with the Harlem Renaissance. Biography Early life Wilson was born in 1899 in Mayfield, Kentucky. His parents were Frank and Minnie Wilson. Frank Wilson was a barber and amateur painter. Wilson attended the Mayfield Colored Grade School. He later attended the Kentucky State College, Kentucky Normal and Industrial Institute in Frankfort, Kentucky, Frankfort for two years, but was only allowed to take courses in agriculture and education. Interested in studying art, Wilson left school at 19 and moved to Chicago where he studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He completed his art studies in 1923 and lived in Chicago for the next five years, seeking work as a commercial artist. Amistad Research Center
The Amistad Research Center (ARC) is an independent archives and manuscripts repository in the United States that specializes in the history of African Americans and ethnic minorities. It is one of the first institutions of its kind in the United States to collect African American ethnic historical records and to document the modern Civil Rights Movement. The ARC has approximately 15 million holdings, emphasizing documents, and also including books, pamphlets, periodicals, photographs, and fine arts. The Auction (The Cosby Show Episode)
'' The Cosby Show'' aired on the NBC television network from September 20, 1984 to April 30, 1992. There were 201 original episodes and one best-moments special, spanning a total of eight seasons. Series overview Episodes Season 1 (1984–85) The opening credits show the Huxtable family arriving at Central Park and playing various sports there, in a series of still images. The show's theme song, titled "Kiss Me", was composed by Stu Gardner and Bill Cosby. Two different versions of the theme song were used in this season: a longer version in the pilot and one other episode, and a shorter version with a slightly different arrangement for the rest of the episodes.
