Funaria Hygrometrica
''Funaria hygrometrica'', the bonfire moss or common cord-moss, is a type of water moss which grows on shady, moist soil. It can also be found on moist walls and the crevices of rocks and places where recent fires have taken place. It has been reported to grow in Niagara Cave, an artificially illuminated cave devoid of natural light. Under such conditions, its growth form changes so that the internodes lengthen and the leaves become longer and narrower. The plant body is green, soft and upright, about half an inch tall. The rhizoids present in this species are multi-cellular and branched. They have oblique septa. The main axis of the plant, which is upright, bears a set of spirally arranged, sessile leaves having a clearly distinguishable midrib. At the apex of the main plant axis, the antheridium is borne. Oedipodium
''Oedipodium'' is the only genus of moss in the family Oedipodiaceae. It contains the single species ''Oedipodium griffithianum'', the gouty-moss or Griffith's oedipodium moss. This species is distributed in cooler climates of Eurasia, as well as from Alaska, Washington state, British Columbia, Yukon, Greenland, Newfoundland, Tierra del Fuego and the Falkland Islands. The relationship of ''Oedipodium'' to other mosses has been much debated. Previously, the taxon has been included with the Funariales or the Splachnales. However, characteristics of the protonemata and asexual propagation, along with molecular evidence, point to a closer relationship with the Tetraphidaceae Tetraphidaceae is a family of mosses. Splachnaceae
Splachnaceae is a family of mosses, containing around 70 species in 6 genera. Around half of those species are entomophilous, using insects to disperse their spores, a characteristic found in no other seedless land plants. Many species in this family are coprophilous, growing exclusively on animal faeces or carrion. For this reason, certain genera such as ''Splachnum'' Hedw. are often referred to as dung mosses. Description Gametophyte Mosses in this family are predominantly dioicous (archegonia and antheridia on separate individuals); although exceptions are known such as ''S.'' Mosses are small, non-vascular flowerless plants in the taxonomic division Bryophyta (, ) ''sensu stricto''.
