Fulton County is a County (United States), county in the U.S. state of New York (state), New York. It forms part of the state's Mohawk Valley region. Its county seat is Johnstown (city), New York, Johnstown. At the 2020 United States census, 2020 U.S. census, the county had a population of 53,324. The county is named in honor of Robert Fulton, who is widely credited with developing the first commercially successful steamboat. Fulton County comprises the Gloversville Micropolitan Statistical Area, micropolitan statistical area, which is included in the Capital District, New York, Capital District. There are 62 counties in the state of New York. The first 12 were created immediately after the British took over the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam; two of these counties were later abolished, their land going to Massachusetts. The newest is Bronx County, created in 1914 from the portions of New York City that had been annexed from Westchester County in the late 19th century and added to New York County.
