Fu Hua Chen
Fu Hua Chen (July 21, 1912 – March 4, 1999) was a Chinese engineer who was a pioneer of soil engineering. Born in Fu Zhou, Fu Jain, China, he was the chief engineer of the Burma Road. He arrived in the United States in 1957 where he set up his own firm. Countless structures from single dwellings to skyscrapers, from long-span bridges to dams rest firmly on foundation systems designed in accordance with requirements set forth by Chen. Burma Road
The Burma Road () was a road linking Burma (now known as Myanmar) with southwest China. Its terminals were Kunming, Yunnan, and Lashio, Burma. It was built while Burma was a British colony to convey supplies to China during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Preventing the flow of supplies on the road helped motivate the occupation of Burma by the Empire of Japan in 1942. Use of the road was restored to the Allies in 1945 after the completion of the Ledo Road. Some parts of the old road are still visible today. History The road is long and runs through rough mountain country. The sections from Kunming to the Burmese border were built by 200,000 Burmese and Chinese laborers during the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937 and completed by 1938 in order to circumvent the Japanese blockade of China. Tung-Yen Lin
Tung-Yen Lin (; November 14, 1912 – November 15, 2003) was a Chinese-American structural engineer who was the pioneer of standardizing the use of prestressed concrete. Biography Born in Fuzhou, Republic of China (ROC), as the fourth of eleven children, he was raised in Beijing where his father was a justice of the ROC's Supreme Court. He did not begin formal schooling until age 11, and only so because his parents forged his birth year to be 1911 so that he would qualify. At only 14, entered Jiaotong University's Tangshan Engineering College (now Southwest Jiaotong University), having earned the top score in math and the second best score overall in the college entrance exams for his entering class. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering in 1931 and left for the United States, where he earned his master's degree in civil engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 1933. Srinivasa 'Hal' Iyengar
Srinivasa "Hal" Iyengar (6 May 1934 – 4 July 2019) was an Indian American civil engineer and a senior structural consultant, who has been particularly instrumental in the development of innovative and efficient structural concepts and systems for high-rise, long-span and stadium structures. Early life and education Iyengar was born in Mysore, India to a prominent civil engineering family and obtained a bachelor's degree in civil engineering as valedictorian of University of Mysore. Traveling with his father to building sites, Iyengar became passionate about civil engineering early on. He went on to earn a master's degree in hydraulic and civil engineering from the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore in 1957, finishing his education at age 23 and moving to the United States that year.
