Baron Isidore Justin Séverin Taylor
Isidore Justin Séverin Taylor was born in Brussels on 5 August 1789 and died in Paris on 6 September 1879. He was closely associated with the development of French theatre, a noted traveller and author, and a philanthropist. Life and career Isidore's father Hélie Taylor was English born and took French nationality. His mother was the Belgian Marie-Jacqueline Walwein (from what was then the Austrian Netherlands). Originally destined for a military career, the young man neglected this in favour of travelling about Europe and later the Near East. Among the fruits of his travels was a series of books on the French regions, ''Voyages pittoresques et romantiques dans l'ancienne France'' (1820–63), the nearly 7000 lithographs in which were the first to catalogue the French artistic patrimony. Benjamin Antier
Benjamin Antier, real name Benjamin Chevrillon, (21 March 1787 – 25 April 1870), was a 19th-century French playwright. An author of melodramas and vaudevilles written in collaboration with other dramatists, he is mostly known for his drama ''L'Auberge des Adrets'', premiered in 1823. The play featured the villain Robert Macaire, played on stage by Frédérick Lemaître, who, in 1835, wrote with Antier a second play called ''Robert Macaire''. The character was then popularized by Daumier's caricatures to become, after James Rousseau's word in his ''Physiologie du Robert Macaire'', "the embodiment of our positive, selfish, greedy, liar, boastful era... basically blagueuse. One-act Play
A one-act play is a play that has only one act, as distinct from plays that occur over several acts. One-act plays may consist of one or more scenes. The 20-40 minute play has emerged as a popular subgenre of the one-act play, especially in writing competitions. One act plays make up the overwhelming majority of Fringe Festival shows including at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The origin of the one-act play may be traced to the very beginning of recorded Western drama: in ancient Greece, '' Cyclops'', a satyr play by Euripides, is an early example. Jean-Toussaint Merle (10 June 1785– 27 February 1852) was a French playwright and journalist. Biography Merle had a good education at the Central School of the department of Hérault before arriving in Paris in 1803. At first an employee at the Ministry of Interior, he soon left the position for military service, and returned to Paris only towards the end of 1808. He then made his debut in literature. His amiable character and easy spirit made him a reputation for indolence which seems in little agreement with the activity of his literary life. The Théâtre des Variétés is a theatre and "salle de spectacles" at 7–8, boulevard Montmartre, 2nd arrondissement, in Paris. It was declared a monument historique in 1974. History It owes its creation to the theatre director Mademoiselle Montansier (Marguerite Brunet). Imprisoned for debt in 1803 and frowned upon by the government, a decree of 1806 ordered her company to leave the Théâtre du Palais-Royal which then bore the name of "Variétés". Couplet
A couplet is a pair of successive lines of metre in poetry. A couplet usually consists of two successive lines that rhyme and have the same metre. A couplet may be formal (closed) or run-on (open). In a formal (or closed) couplet, each of the two lines is end-stopped, implying that there is a grammatical pause at the end of a line of verse. In a run-on (or open) couplet, the meaning of the first line continues to the second. Background The word "couplet" comes from the French word meaning "two pieces of iron riveted or hinged together". Claude-Aimé Desprez-Saint-Clair (5 April 1783 – 26 April 1824) was a French vaudeville playwright and chansonnier. Louis Alexandre Piccinni (variously Louis Alexandre, Luigi Alessandro or Lodovice Alessandro) (10 September 1779 – 24 April 1850) was a prolific music composer born in Paris of Italian ancestry. Alexandre Piccinni was born in Paris. The grandson of the Italian composer of symphonies, sacred music, chamber music, and opera, Niccolò Piccinni, and the son of Giuseppe Luigi Piccinni, Louis was already giving piano lessons at age 13. The Théâtre du Palais-Royal () is a 750-seat Parisian theatre at 38 rue de Montpensier, located at the northwest corner of the Palais-Royal in the Galerie de Montpensier at its intersection with the Galerie de Beaujolais.
