Fruit Bowl
The Fruit Bowl was a post-season college football bowl game held in December at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco, California. The game was held three times, following the 1947-1949 seasons. The first two games featured college teams and the last involved club teams. The games were important due to the inclusion of schools that are considered historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in both the 1947 and 1948 games. The 1947 game featured two such schools, and Prairie View A&M. This was the first meeting of HBCUs in San Francisco. The 1948 game was the first inter-racial bowl game played in the United States. The following is a list of current, defunct, and proposed college football bowl games. Three bowl games are currently part of the College Football Playoff, a selection system that creates bowl matchups involving four of the top-ranked teams in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). There are also a number of other college football postseason invitationals, as well as several all-star games. For nearly a century, bowl games were the purview of only the very best teams, but a steady proliferation of new bowl games required more teams, with 70 participating teams by the 2010–11 bowl season, then 80 participating teams by the 2015–16 bowl season. As a result, the NCAA has steadily reduced the criteria for bowl eligibility. Teams with a non-winning record (6–6) were allowed starting in 2010. 1948 San Francisco State Gators Football Team
The 1948 San Francisco State Gators football team represented San Francisco State College—now known as San Francisco State University—as a member of the Far Western Conference (FWC) during the 1948 college football season. Led by sixth-year head coach Dick Boyle, San Francisco State compiled an overall record of 3–5 with a mark of 2–2 in conference play, placing third in the FWC. For the season the team was outscored by its opponents 137 to 63. The Gators played home games at Cox Stadium in San Francisco. At the end of the season, the Gators were invited to participate in the second annual Fruit Bowl. Held on December 5, it was the first interracial bowl game played in the United States. In their 13th season under head coach Ace Mumford, the Jaguars compiled a 12–0 record, won the SWAC championship, shut out eight of 12 opponents, and outscored all opponents by a total of 395 to 33.
