Frontier Midstates, Inc. is a telephone operating company of Frontier Communications serving Indiana and Michigan. It was originally owned by Contel, and later purchased by GTE, Verizon, and then sold to Frontier. History The company was established in 1956 to provide telephone service in Georgia. As a subsidiary of Contel, it adopted the name Continental Telephone Company of the South. It expanded as it absorbed the operations various companies in Alabama and Georgia, including Alabama Telephone Company in 1975, Coosa Valley Telephone Company, and Tri-County Telephone Company, Incorporated in 1978. The company adopted its abbreviated name, Contel of the South, Inc., in 1988. Verizon South, Inc. is a Verizon operating company providing local telephone services to portions of Virginia and North Carolina in the United States. History Verizon South was originally established in 1947 as The Bluefield Telephone Corporation, providing telephone service to communities in Virginia including its namesake Bluefield. The company's first president was R.A. Phillips and was formally incorporated by Judson Large, Dean A. Esling, Richard L. Merrick, William W. Darrow, and Roland K. Smith, Jr. The company changed its name to Bluefield Telephone Company on January 16, 1948. Frontier North, Inc. is a local telephone operating company owned by Frontier Communications. History Frontier North was founded as Contel North, Inc., incorporated in Wisconsin in 1992. History The company, sold to Frontier Communications on July 1, 2010, serves as a holding company for former Bell System, Contel, and GTE telephone operating companies that were owned by Verizon prior to July 1, 2010. The company was set up to allow for a Reverse Morris Trust merger, allowing Verizon to spin-off the company to Frontier tax-free. Its primary purpose was to transfer Frontier ILEC Holdings as well as Verizon debt that Frontier was to assume. Frontier Southwest Incorporated is a Frontier Communications operating company in Texas. At its peak, Frontier Southwest served Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico. History Its original name upon founding was State Telephone Company of Texas. It later changed its name to Southwestern Associated Telephone Company, and General Telephone Company of the Southwest. In 1996, Contel of New Mexico and Contel of Texas were merged into GTE Southwest. Fragmentation In 1999, GTE announced that it was going to sell 1.3 million access lines. GTE agreed to sell 400,000 lines in New Mexico and lines in rural areas of Texas to a company called Valor Telecom (later absorbed into Windstream Holdings).
