''Von morgens bis mitternachts'' is an expressionist play written by the German dramatist Georg Kaiser in 1912, but banned for reasons which were not entirely clear, being neither immoral nor anarchistic, then in 1917 produced by the Austrian Max Reinhardt. It was translated for the English stage as ''From Morn to Midnight: A Play in Seven Scenes'' by Ashley Dukes, and produced by the Stage Society to negative reviews. A modern translation by Dennis Kelly was titled ''From Morning to Midnight''. Expressionism is a modernist movement, initially in poetry and painting, originating in Northern Europe around the beginning of the 20th century. Its typical trait is to present the world solely from a subjective perspective, distorting it radically for emotional effect in order to evoke moods or ideas. English National Opera
English National Opera (ENO) is an opera company based in London, resident at the London Coliseum in St Martin's Lane. It is one of the two principal opera companies in London, along with The Royal Opera. ENO's productions are sung in English. The company's origins were in the late 19th century, when the philanthropist Emma Cons, later assisted by her niece Lilian Baylis, presented theatrical and operatic performances at the Old Vic, for the benefit of local people. Baylis subsequently built up both the opera and the theatre companies, and later added a ballet company; these evolved into the ENO, the Royal National Theatre and The Royal Ballet, respectively. David Sawer
David Sawer (born 14 September 1961), is a British composer of opera and choral, orchestral and chamber music. Biography Sawer was born in Stockport, England. After attending Ipswich School, he studied music at the University of York where he began composing contemporary music-theatre pieces. He directed the UK premiere of Mauricio Kagel's ''Kantrimiusik'' at the ICA, conducted the UK premieres of ''Mare Nostrum'' and ''Szenario'', and appeared as solo performer in ''Phonophonie'' at the South Bank Centre, London, and in the world premiere of Harrison Birtwistle's ''Gawain'' at the Royal Opera House. Karlheinz Martin
Karlheinz Martin (May 6, 1886 – January 13, 1948) was a German stage and film director, best known for his expressionist productions. After enjoying success with experimental productions in Frankfurt am Main and Hamburg, Martin went to Berlin, where he premiered Ernst Toller's anti-war drama, ''Transfiguration'' (''Die Wandlung'') on September 30, 1919. Performed in a hall seating fewer than 300 spectators, the production used the intimacy of the space to drive home the horrors of Toller's script. The sets were jagged flats placed against blackness, and lit with harsh white spotlights. Scenes ended in blackouts not, as was customary at the time, with the curtain falling. Fritz Kortner became famous for his intense portrayal of the young hero. ''From Morn to Midnight'' (german: Von morgens bis mitternachts) is a 1920 German silent expressionist film directed by Karlheinz Martin based on the 1912 play '' From Morning to Midnight'' by Georg Kaiser. It is one of the most radical films of the German Expressionist movement. The film uses stylized distorted sets, designed by Robert Neppach, which are even more avant-garde than those of the 1920 film '' The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari'' Plot The film is divided in five acts. 1st Act A foreign lady comes into a bank to withdraw money but the bank manager has not received a communication authorising the payment. Georg Kaiser
Friedrich Carl Georg Kaiser, called Georg Kaiser, (25 November 1878 – 4 June 1945) was a German dramatist. Biography Kaiser was born in Magdeburg. He was highly prolific and wrote in a number of different styles. An Expressionist dramatist, he was, along with Gerhart Hauptmann, the most frequently performed playwright of the Weimar Republic. Georg Kaiser's plays include ''The Burghers of Calais'' (1913), ''From Morning to Midnight'' (1912), and a trilogy, comprising ''The Coral'' (1917), ''Gas'' (1918), ''Gas II'' (1920). He died in Ascona, Switzerland, and was buried in Morcote near Lugano. Work ''The Burghers of Calais'' (''Die Bürger von Calais''), written in 1913, was not performed until 1917.
