Icelandic (; is, íslenska, link=no ) is a North Germanic language spoken by about 314,000 people, the vast majority of whom live in Iceland, where it is the national language. Due to being a West Scandinavian language, it is most closely related to Faroese, western Norwegian dialects, and the extinct language, Norn. The language is more conservative than most other Germanic languages. Friðrik Þór Friðriksson (born 12 May 1954; pronounced ), sometimes credited as Fridrik Thor Fridriksson, is an Icelandic film director and producer. Biography Fridriksson started his film making career with experimental films and documentaries in the early 1980s. In 1987, he founded The Icelandic Film Corporation that became Iceland's most important film production company. The company produces his films and works with other Icelandic directors as well as producers. His international reputation led the company to build a network of internationally well-established co-production partner companies, including Lars von Trier's Zentropa and Francis Ford Coppola's American Zoetrope. Friðrik Ólafsson
Friðrik Ólafsson (born 26 January 1935) is an Icelandic chess grandmaster. He was president of FIDE from 1978 to 1982. He is a six-time Icelandic Chess Champion and a two-time Nordic Chess Champion. Chess career Friðrik was born in Reykjavík, Iceland. A first-time winner of the Icelandic Chess Championship in 1952 and of the Nordic Chess Championship a year later, he rapidly became recognised as the strongest Icelandic chess player of his generation. Friðrik's first result of international note was his shared first with Viktor Korchnoi at Hastings 1955–56. Friðrik's best result in World Chess Championship competition was in the 1958 Interzonal tournament, where he finished equal 5th–6th, automatically earning the grandmaster title (the first for Iceland) and qualifying for the 1959 Candidates Tournament, the last stage to determine the challenger to the World Chess Champion in 1960. Friðrik Ómar Hjörleifsson (born 4 October 1981) is an Icelandic singer best known for representing Iceland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 as part of Eurobandið as lead vocals. Career Friðrik Ómar was born in Akureyri. He began playing drums at the age of five but was later asked to sing at a festival for his school, his first performance with an audience other than his mother. Impressing the crowd, he then went on to win many competitions in his hometown and made the decision to be a singer. He has worked with some of most successful artists in Iceland. In 2006, he released his debut solo album ''Annan dag'' and was nominated as "singer of the year" at the Icelandic Music Awards. Friðrik Dór Jónsson (born 7 October 1988) is an Icelandic R&B and pop singer-songwriter. He began his career forming the band Fendrix with his schoolmates while in grade 8. He played drums in the band. The band took part in Músíktilraunir in 2003. He studied in Verzlunarskóli Íslands, a commerce college in Iceland, taking part in a number of musicals at the college. His first solo record was in 2009, with the song "Hlið við hlið" that was played heavily on FM 957 reaching number 2 on the station's charts. He also landed a part in the film ''Bjarnfreðarson'', released around Christmas 2009. His follow-up singles were "Á sama stað" in collaboration with the rapper Erpur Eyvindarson and "Fyrir hana" both in 2010. In spring 2010, Friðrik Dór appeared in episode 5 of the comedy show ''Steindinn okkar'' on Stöð 2 Icelandic commercial channel where his character is robbed and murdered.
