Fritz Saxl
Friedrich "Fritz" Saxl (8 January 1890, Vienna, Austria – 22 March 1948, Dulwich, London) was the art historian who was the guiding light of the Warburg Institute, especially during the long mental breakdown of its founder, Aby Warburg, whom he succeeded as director. Life and work Saxl studied in his native Vienna under Franz Wickhoff, Julius von Schlosser and Max Dvořák, who oversaw his dissertation on Rembrandt. Then in Berlin Saxl studied under Heinrich Wölfflin, and spent 1912–13 researching in Italy for his only major work, a study of medieval illuminated manuscripts with astrological and mythological elements, marrying Elise Bienenfeld in 1913. He served in the Austro-Hungarian army as a lieutenant on the Italian front for the duration of World War I. Karl Lehmann (archaeologist)
Karl Leo Heinrich Lehmann (1894–1960) was a German-born American art historian, archaeologist, and professor. He was known for archaeology work in Samothrace, Greece and the related publications. He was a professor at New York University Institute of Fine Arts from 1935, until his death in 1950. Lehmann was the founder and director of the Archaeological Research Fund at New York University Early life and education Lehmann was born September 27, 1894 in Rostock, Germany, in a Lutheran household. He was the son of artist Henriette "Henni" Lehmann (1862–1937) and lawyer Karl Lehmann (1858–1918), his sister was Etruscan scholar Eva Fiesel. His family was of Jewish ancestry. Lehmann studied in Tübingen, Göttingen, and Munich. During World War I from 1917–1918, he served as a translator with the Turkish naval command. Richard Krautheimer
Richard Krautheimer (6 July 1897 in Fürth (Franconia), Germany – 1 November 1994 in Rome, Italy) was a 20th-century art historian, architectural historian, Baroque scholar, and Byzantinist. Biography Krautheimer was born in Germany in 1897, the son of Nathan Krautheimer (1854–1910) and Martha Landmann (Krautheimer) (1875–1967). Krautheimer's cousin, Ernst Kitzinger, would also become a prominent Byzantinist. Krautheimer fought in the First World War as an enlisted soldier in the German army (1916–18). Between 1919 and 1923, he initially studied law at, successively, universities in Munich, Berlin, and Marburg under faculty who included Heinrich Wölfflin, Adolf Goldschmidt and Werner Weisbach. The ''Census of Antique Works of Art and Architecture Known in the Renaissance'' (abbreviated ''Census'') is an interdisciplinary research project dedicated to the study of the reception of antiquity in the Renaissance.
