Alfie Fripp
Alfred George Fripp (13 June 1914 –3 January 2013), known as "Alfie" or "Bill", was a British Royal Air Force squadron leader who was a flight sergeant during the Second World War. He was shot down by the Luftwaffe in 1939 and held in twelve different prisoner of war camps, including Stalag Luft III, later the site of the " Great Escape". As the last of the "39ers" (those taken prisoner in the first year of the war), he was the oldest surviving and longest serving British POW. Early life Fripp was born in Alverstoke (Hampshire, England) on 13 June 1914. He was raised in Wimborne (Dorset England). Alfred Downing Fripp (artist)
Alfred Downing Fripp (22 April 1822 – 13 March 1895) was a British artist who specialised in watercolours of rural subjects. He was grandson of the artist Nicholas Pocock, a brother of the painter George Arthur Fripp, and father of the surgeon Sir Alfred Downing Fripp. Fripp was born in Bristol and studied at the Royal Academy of Arts. He held his first exhibition in 1842, his initial works featuring Irish and Welsh peasants in landscape settings. In 1844 he became an associate of the Old Watercolour Society, progressing to full membership in 1846, and ultimately becoming its secretary from 1870 onward. Following the death of his first wife in 1850, he spent a decade in Italy, where he became friends with Frederick Leighton and Edward Poynter. On his return in 1859 he married Eliza Banister Roe and he continued to paint British subjects, with a particular interest in Dorset scenery around Lulworth. Sir Alfred Downing Fripp (12 September 1865 – 25 February 1930) was born in Blandford Forum, in 1865. He was surgeon to both King Edward VII and King George V. Early life Fripp was the son of the artist Alfred Downing Fripp and Eliza Bannister Roe. His father's first wife, Anne Dalton Allies, was a cousin of John Neale Dalton, tutor to Prince Albert Victor and Prince George and godfather to Fripp. Anne died in 1850 after giving birth to Fripp's half-sister, Annie. Fripp had another sister, Jeanie (Edith Jane), and a brother, Rex (Reginald). Annie married Edward Penny, who became physician to Marlborough College. Rex, a pupil of the school, died aged eighteen - in 1895; their parents died in the same bronchial epidemic. Jeanie had gained a ' Senior Optime' in Mathematics at Girton in 1886 and soon after married William Hale-White, son of Mark Rutherford. Alfred Ernest Fripp
Alfred Ernest Fripp, KC (June 29, 1866 – March 25, 1938) was a Canadian lawyer and politician. Born in Ottawa, Ontario, the son of Sidney Bowles Fripp, he was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada in the riding of Ottawa (City of) in the 1911 federal elections. A Conservative, he was re-elected in 1917 but was defeated in 1921. Edgar Innes Fripp
Edgar Innes Fripp (27 November 1861 – 9 November 1931) was a Unitarian minister and English antiquarian who specialized in Shakespearean research in the archives of Stratford-upon-Avon, and the father of the artist Paul Fripp. Life Born in London to George Arthur Fripp (1813–1896) and Mary Fripp, ''nee'' Percival (1825–1887). Fripp graduated from Manchester College, Oxford, and served as a Unitarian minister from 1887 to 1924. He died on 9 Nov 1931 in Colchester, Essex, and was buried on 12 Nov 1931 in Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire. Family Fripp married Edith Caroline Morley on 16 Apr 1889, and they had four children. George Arthur Fripp
George Arthur Fripp (13 June 1813 – 17 October 1896) was a British watercolourist. He was a grandson of the artist Nicholas Pocock and brother of the painter Alfred Downing Fripp. His nephew was the artist Henry Charles Innes Fripp. Life Fripp was born in Bristol, and educated in Bristol, Birmingham and Leamington. He had lessons in oil painting from James Baker Pyne and first exhibited at the Bristol Society of Artists in 1832. In 1834 he accompanied the Bristol artist William James Müller on a sketching tour of Europe, which produced works he later exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1838. In 1841, he exhibited at the Old Watercolour Society, becoming an associate that year, a full member in 1845, and secretary from 1848 to 1854. He became well known for his watercolours, mostly scenic British views. He married Mary Percival in 1846. Johnny Fripp
John Downing Fripp (February 11, 1921 – March 24, 2022) was a Canadian skier and football player. He was a skier between 1927 and 1960 and played football in the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union (IRFU) (now CFL East Division) and Ontario Rugby Football Union (ORFU) between 1941 and 1947.
