Friendship, New York
Friendship is a town in Allegany County, New York, United States. The population was 1,960 at the 2020 census. The town's name was adopted to mark the resolution of earlier conflicts. Friendship is near the center of Allegany County and is northeast of the city of Olean. History The region was first settled by Euro-Americans around 1806. Originally, the town gained the name of "Bloody Corners" due to the high incidence of feuding, and alleged weekend fights. "The finer citizens took offense, went to the other extreme and officially named it Friendship. In the southern end of the town is the hamlet of Nile. It is believed the named derived from the wishes of early settlers, many of who were Seventh Day Baptists." The town of Friendship was formed in 1815 from part of the town of Caneadea. Olean, New York
Olean ( ) is a city in Cattaraugus County, New York, United States. Olean is the largest city in Cattaraugus County and serves as its financial, business, transportation and entertainment center. It is one of the principal cities of the Southern Tier region of Western New York. The city is surrounded by the town of Olean and is located in the southeastern part of Cattaraugus County. The population was 13,437 in 2019 per the United States Census Bureau. History The first European in the area was possibly Joseph de La Roche Daillon, a missionary and explorer from Canada. New York State Route 275
New York State Route 275 (NY 275) is a north–south state highway in Allegany County, New York, in the United States. It runs for , connecting the village of Bolivar and NY 417 at its southern end with the hamlet of Friendship to the north, where it intersects the Southern Tier Expressway ( NY 17 and Interstate 86 or I-86) by way of an interchange. The road continues north past the interchange to NY 19 in Belfast as County Route 17 (CR 17). NY 275 was assigned as part of the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York to the portion of its routing south of Friendship. It was extended slightly northward in July 1974 to connect to the Southern Tier Expressway. New York State Route 17 (NY 17) is a major state highway that extends for through the Southern Tier and Downstate regions of New York in the United States. It begins at the Pennsylvania state line in Mina and follows the Southern Tier Expressway east through Corning to Binghamton and the Quickway from Binghamton east to Woodbury, where it turns south to follow the Orange Turnpike to the New Jersey state line near Suffern, where it connects to New Jersey Route 17. From the Pennsylvania border to the village of Waverly and from Binghamton to Windsor, NY 17 is concurrent with Interstate 86 (I-86). Interstate 86 (I-86) is an Interstate Highway that extends for through northwestern Pennsylvania and the Southern Tier region of New York, in the United States. The highway has two segments: the longer of the two begins at an interchange with I-90 east of Erie, Pennsylvania, and ends just beyond the Chemung- Tioga county line at the Pennsylvania border, while the second extends from I-81 east of Binghamton to New York State Route 79 (NY 79) in Windsor. When projects to upgrade the existing NY 17 to Interstate Highway standards are completed, I-86 will extend from I-90 near Erie to the New York State Thruway ( I-87) in Woodbury. Friendship Free Library, also known as Pitt Memorial Library, is a historic library building located at Friendship in Allegany County, New York. Constructed of yellow brick in 1912, and designed by Otis Dockstader of Elmira, the building is composed of a five- by two bay, one story main block, with a large four by four bay block to the rear. Wellman House
Wellman House is a historic home located at Friendship in Allegany County, New York. It is a -story, clapboard dwelling constructed in 1835 and remembered as the residence of Col. Abijah Wellman. A Mansard roof was added later to the original house. It is surrounded by three and a half acres of well kept formal gardens and is the centerpiece of the town of Friendship. Bolivar, New York
Bolivar ( ) is a town in Allegany County, New York, United States. The population was 2,051 at the 2020 census. The town is named after Simón Bolívar. Bolivar is on the south border of the county and is east of Olean. There is also a village of Bolivar in the town. As "the heart of the Allegany Oil Field" the Bolivar-Richburg area rose to significance during the oil boom era of the late 1800s. During the brief initial oil boom of the 1880s it was purportedly the wealthiest locale, per capita, in the United States. By the early 1900s the initial boom, with its economic and population impacts, had significantly faded, but secondary oil recovery techniques applied to the oil fields (starting around 1920) drastically rejuvenated the industry in the area.
