Friedrich Eisenhofer
Friedrich Eisenhofer (14 November 1926 – 27 July 2023) was a New Zealand Modern architecture, modernist architect based in Waikanae. Biography Eisenhofer was born in the Austrian town of Spittal an der Drau on 14 November 1926, and studied architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, Kunstakademie in Vienna after the Second World War. Eisenhofer emigrated to New Zealand in 1953 in a group of almost 200 skilled Austrian tradesmen contracted to build 500 pre-cut Austrian State housing in New Zealand, state houses in Titahi Bay (Porirua). After the completion of the project, Eisenhofer gained New Zealand residency and began working at the Department of Building and Housing, Department of Housing in Wellington. In the late 1950s he went into partnership with fellow Austrian architect Erwin Winkler, setting up practice at 108 Cuba Street, Wellington. Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) is a membership-based professional organisation that represents 90 per cent of all registered architects in New Zealand, and promotes architecture that enhances the New Zealand living environment. The organisation was founded in 1905, and provides services to New Zealand architects, such as ongoing professional training, policies and guidelines to promote high quality architectural practice, events and general support for the architectural profession in New Zealand. New Zealand Architecture Awards The Institute also functions to celebrate outstanding architecture, in part by presenting annual awards for excellence in architecture. These annual awards are named the New Zealand Architecture Awards, and have been sponsored by Resene paints since 1990.
