Bernard Freyberg, 1st Baron Freyberg
Lieutenant-General Bernard Cyril Freyberg, 1st Baron Freyberg, (21 March 1889 – 4 July 1963) was a British-born New Zealand soldier and Victoria Cross recipient, who served as the 7th Governor-General of New Zealand from 1946 to 1952. Freyberg served as an officer in the British Army during the First World War. He took part in the beach landings during the Gallipoli Campaign and was the youngest general in the British Army during the First World War, later serving on the Western Front, where he was decorated with the Victoria Cross and three Distinguished Service Orders, making him one of the most highly decorated British Empire soldiers of the First World War. He liked to be in the thick of the action: Winston Churchill called him "the Salamander" due to his ability to pass through fire unharmed. Freyberg High School
Freyberg High School ( mi, Te Kura o Te Pou Hōia) is a state co-educational secondary school located in the suburb of Roslyn in Palmerston North, New Zealand. Freyberg High School is named for hero of both world wars, Lord Bernard Freyberg, who is known for his service in the Gallipoli Campaign during the First World War and later service commanding the New Zealand Expeditionary Force during the Second World War. Freyberg served as the 7th Governor-General of New Zealand from 1946 to 1952. Opening in 1955 as the city's fourth state secondary school, Freyberg High School is now one of the largest schools in Palmerston North, with a roll of students as of , behind Palmerston North Boys' High School and Palmerston North Girls' High School. Baron Freyberg
Baron Freyberg, of Wellington in New Zealand and of Munstead in the County of Surrey, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1951 for the prominent military commander Lieutenant-General Sir Bernard Freyberg. He served as Governor-General of New Zealand from 1946 to 1952. His only son, the second Baron, was a Colonel in the Grenadier Guards. , the title is held by the latter's only son, the third Baron, who succeeded in 1993. Colonel Paul Richard Freyberg, 2nd Baron Freyberg, (27 May 1923 – 26 May 1993) was a British soldier and peer. Born in Paddington, London, was the son of Lieutenant General Bernard Freyberg and his wife Barbara McLaren. Barbara was the widow of Hon. Francis Walter Stafford McLaren and had had two sons, Martin John McLaren and Guy Lewis Ian McLaren, who were thus half-brothers to Paul Freyberg. Paul was educated at Eton College, Berkshire. He became a lieutenant colonel in the Grenadier Guards. During the Second World War, he served with the 2nd New Zealand Division in Greece in 1941 and the Long Range Desert Group in the Middle East 1941–42, then with the Grenadier Guards in Tunisia and Italy 1942–45. Valerian Bernard Freyberg, 3rd Baron Freyberg (born 15 December 1970), is a British peer, sitting as a crossbencher. The son of the Paul Freyberg, 2nd Baron Freyberg, 2nd Baron Freyberg and Ivry Perronelle Katharine, he was educated at Camberwell College of Arts, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1994. Barbara Freyberg, Baroness Freyberg, GBE, DStJ (born Barbara Jekyll and known as Barbara McLaren during her first marriage; 14 June 1887 – 24 September 1973) was a British peeress. Family Born as Barbara Jekyll, she was a daughter of Colonel Sir Herbert Jekyll, KCMG and his wife, Dame Agnes Graham Jekyll, DBE. On 20 July 1911, she married Hon. Francis Walter Stafford McLaren, the-then Liberal MP for Spalding and the second son of the 1st Baron Aberconway. They had two sons, Major Martin John McLaren (11 January 1914 – 27 July 1979) and Guy Lewis Ian McLaren (8 November 1915 – 18 August 1978). Francis, a Royal Flying Corps officer and the Member of Parliament for Spalding in Lincolnshire, was killed in a flying accident 1917.
